There past: Did something exciting or sad happen to them before your story started?
Show how your character feels and reacts to things.
Think about: adjectives & adverbs; similes & metaphors; powerful verbs.
Example
George stood by the ocean, his brown shirt full of tiny holes as if worn through adventures. His necklace—a smooth, carved shell—dangled against his chest, glinting in the sunlight. His short, dark hair fell messily over his forehead, giving him a carefree look. He had kind, curious eyes and a confident smile that hinted at secrets of faraway places. The breeze ruffled his clothes, and the warm sand beneath his feet seemed to welcome him. Strong arms and a relaxed posture made him seem both ready for action and at home in the peaceful beach setting.
