Fairtrade Fruity Fun & Fitness for Fairtrade Friday

Today is our Focus day.  It is about Fairtrade and Food.

We are a Fair Active school.  We know that Fair Trade gives farmers a decent amount of money for their delicious crops.

We used Fairtrade bananas in our fruit kebabs today for Fitter Fruity Fridays.
We have been learning skills for cutting with knives. The different grips are called the bridge and the claw.   These grips help us to keep the knife away from our fingers so we don’t cut ourselves.  Have a look at our photos.

Information Report Writing

Today we started learning about information reports.  We know that they need to have paragraphs and facts.  They are non fiction.  They need to have a title and sub headings.  They can also have pictures or diagrams.

To show what we know, we got an information report and used our iPads to highlight the different features like headings, sub headings, pictures, paragraphs and present tense.

Plants and Growing Topic

In our class topic we are learning all about Plants and Growing. We have learnt about what we need to do to grow plants, this includes:

1. Pick a plant you like and pick a suitable spot.
2. Plant the seed, in good soil, following the instructions on the packet.
3. Water the plants often.
4. Most importantly, take care of them by checking them regularly!

We created beautiful posters and flyers to show others our learning of this.

We have also been researching various types of plants and beautiful flowers from around the world using our iPads. We picked our favourite flowers and created colleges of them using pic collage!

Fitter Fruity Fridays

Introducing Fitter Fruity Fridays, an enterprise run by P3/4/5.

P3/4/5 have been learning about how different foods give us energy and how exercise keeps us fit.  They suggested that it would be good to show the rest of the pupils.

During previous sessions, some of the pupils have been part of the “Banton Bakery” and “Slurpz Smoothies” Fairtrade Enterprise  projects and the pupils were keen  to do something like this again.

In discussion with Mrs Rae, they came up with the idea of creating a workout for the other pupils to keep them fit and then providing a fruity treat as a reward.  The pupils were aware that they still had the profits from the Banton Bakery to spend and were keen to provide this fruit for free for all pupils by using this money to buy the fruit.

When creating the workout the children were very thoughtful and aware of the difference in skills and abilities of all of our pupils from P1 to P7.  They decided to adapt each exercise so there are three levels and each pupil can choose the one they are comfortable doing.

We are very much looking forward to launching this next Friday 28th February.  For more information, please check out our posters made by our talented P3/4/5 pupils using a range of digital skills.

Healthy Food

Today we have been learning about healthy food and the Eatwell Plate.

We now know these things about food:

Valentina- try to drink 6-8 glasses of water per day.

Summer – try to eat fruits and vegetables.

Rose – only eat a little bit of oil.

Mikey – Bananas are in the fruits and vegetables food group.

Iona – There are 5 sections in the Eatwell Plate.

Leo – Don’t drink too much fruit juice.  Eating the fruit is better for you.

Craig – Some of the food groups are called Fruit & Vegetables, Carbohydrates, Dairy, Meats, Fish & Proteins,  Oils & Fats

Violet – Only have a little bit of sweets or cakes every day.

We used our digital skills to complete our own Eatwell Plates.  Have a look at our work.

Learning about Volume

To start the new term, we have been revising what we learned about volume last term.

We know that you measure volume in ml or litres.  You can write that the short way using ml or l.

You can use lots of different things to measure volume such as cups, spoons or jugs.  However, these can be all different sizes so we can’t use these to compare volumes.  That is why we use the units of litres and millilitres.

We can use measuring jugs to measure accurately and we can use the scale on the side of the jugs.

To show we can do this, we filled different measuring jugs with oats so they contained different volumes.

Have a look at our photos to see how we got on.

Haiku Poems and Potatoes!

Over the past few weeks we have been learning about Haiku poems.

Here are some things we know about them.

1-They have three lines.

2 – They have 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second and 5 in the last line.

3 – They are a Japanese type of poetry.

Sometimes we found it hard to think of what words to use.  You had to think hard about the words and had to go back and check your lines lots of time.

We learned how to work out how many syllables are in a word.  You can clap it out or count how many times your chin moves when you say the word.

Today we have been cooking potatoes that we grew in our garden.  While we waited for them to boil we wrote Haikus about potatoes.

Outdoor Learning – Day 3🌧️💦😁

Primary 3/4 had their 3rd outdoor learning day last Thursday and we loved it even though it was very wet!
We started off our day making our own alphabets using natural materials that we could find in the playground. Lots of us decided to use sticks because we thought they would be easiest and make the best letters. 🔠
Next we used some chalk to draw out some examples of fractions and got a partner to write it down. We enjoy being the teacher for our partners 🧑🏻‍🏫👩🏼‍🏫👨🏽‍🏫
In the afternoon we done some planting of vegetables. We planted some carrots, onion and leak! We enjoyed getting our hands dirty and fingers crossed our plants grow! 🧅🥕🧑🏽‍🌾

Outdoor Learning Day – Term 2🌥️🥶👍🏼

Primary 3/4 spent the day learning outside🥶❄️🌥️

We started off with some literacy work. We had to find our own object from the playground to make into our very own character for a story. Once we were finished and had lots of ideas we shared them to everyone in the class. We got very creative!
Next was maths. We have started focusing on money so we had a money hunt. It took us ages to find some but we managed!
Lastly, our topic in class is the 1980s so we looked at a game they played in the 80s which was hopscotch. We all made our own one then decided to join them all together to make a huge one!
It was freezing outside today but we give our outdoor learning day a thumbs up! 😁👍🏼

Primary 3/4 Update!!

We have been very busy in primary 3/4.

We enjoyed the nice, sunny weather and managed to have some outdoor races, we were soooo fast! ☀️🏃‍♀️🏃🏽‍♂️
We have also been working so well with the other boys and girls in our class, during maths games and during our art work for our science topic of the Water Cycle. ➕🎨💦💧

On Roald Dahl day we done a comprehension activity and learned all about Roald Dahl’s life. It was very interesting! 📚
We have all been really enjoying our new topic of the Water Cycle! We have been researching and designing our own posters for the different types of clouds! Ask us all about it!!🌨️💦💧
Finally, we loved our classroom PE time, we done some yoga and dancing. We enjoyed letting all friends see our silly dancing but it really tired us out 🕺🏽👯‍♀️👯‍♂️😴
