The Higher Physical Education Course allows learners to develop and demonstrate a broad and comprehensive range of complex movement and performance skills in challenging contexts. Learners also analyse a performance, understand what is required to develop it, and apply this knowledge to their own performance.
The course consists of two areas of study and a course assessment
Factors Impacting on Performance
All of the knowledge and understanding of the course will cover these 5 broad areas.
• factors impacting on performance (mental, emotional, social and
physical)
• methods of collecting information to analyse factors impacting on
performance
• key planning information
• performance development process
• recording, monitoring and evaluating performance development
Candidates develop knowledge and understanding of mental, emotional, social and physical factors that impact on personal performance in physical activities.
Through collecting information, candidates consider how these factors can influence effectiveness in performance. They develop knowledge and understanding of a range of approaches for enhancing performance. Candidates select and apply these approaches to factors that impact on their personal performance.
Candidates create and implement Personal Development Plans (PDPs), modify these, and justify decisions relating to future personal development needs.
Performance
Candidates develop their ability to demonstrate a broad and comprehensive range of complex movement and performance skills through a range of physical activities. They select, demonstrate, apply and adapt these skills, and use them to make informed decisions. They also develop their knowledge and understanding of how these skills combine to produce effective outcomes.
Candidates develop consistency, precision, control and fluency of movement. They also learn how to respond to, and meet, the demands of performance in a safe and effective way.
Course Assessment Structure (EXAM)
Course assessment will provide the basis for grading attainment in the Course award. The course assessment is graded A–D. The grade is determined on the basis of the total mark for all Course assessments together. A learner’s overall grade will be determined by their performance across the course assessment.
To achieve an award candidates must pass the exam and physical performance assessment.
Component 1 — performance in two different activities 60 marks (50% of overall mark)
60 marks out of the total 110 marks (60% scaled to 50%)
30 marks per activity.
The performance assesses candidate’s ability to perform in TWO DIFFERENT physical activities.
They are assessed against the following criteria:
- Repertoire of skills. (7 marks)
- Control and fluency of complex movements and performance skills. (7 marks)
- Effective decision-making and problem solving. (7 marks)
- Using and applying well established composition, tactics and roles. (7 marks)
- Extent to which rules and regulations are followed and etiquette is displayed (including working with others). (1 mark)
- Extent to which emotions are controlled on the day of the performance. (1 mark)
HIGHER AVERAGE EXAM PERFORMANCE MARKS = 44.3/60 (2018-2019 DATA)
Component 2 — exam question paper 50 marks (2 and a half hours)(50% of overall mark)
Question Paper (2 hour 30mins)
3 Sections, all questions must be attempted
SECTION 1 (Worth 32 marks)
Questions relate to skills & KU of the four factors that impact on performance and will cover one or more of the five broad areas of skills, knowledge and understanding.
SECTION 2 (Marks range from 6-10 marks)
Focuses on candidate’s experience of creating and implementing a Personal Development Plan over a minimum of 3 sessions and covers at least two factors impacting on performance.
SECTION 3 (Marks range from 8-12 marks)
Scenario based
Two factors impacting on performance will be sampled
HIGHER EXAM AVERAGE MARKS FOR THE QUESTION PAPER= 18.3/50 (2018-2019 DATA)
