Physical Education is central to the Airdrie Academy curriculum not just because pupils enjoy it, but because they embody many qualities in which the school believes. Learning to win and lose, to lead and be led, to push oneself to and perhaps beyond one’s limits, to think as part of a team, to know when to strive for more and when to acknowledge defeat; these are all part of learning to be human. Consequently, Airdrie Academy aims to give every pupil the chance to benefit from learning through a variety of sports at the level appropriate to their abilities. Physical Education allows pupils to engage in a diverse range of challenging learning experiences contributing to their physical, social, emotional and mental development.
As well as pupils being physically active, they will participate in many other tasks which will not require them to be physically active. For example, they may referee, organise equipment, plan lessons/games, be part of group discussion and co-operative learning tasks. To be fully involved in this process pupils must always have full P.E Kit.
In S1-S3, as part of their Broad General Education pupils will participate in a wide range of physical activities to improve their physical movement skills. They will also learn about how a range of other factors, such as co-operating, communicating, mental and emotional factors impact their overall health and wellbeing.
In S4, Core PE pupils will be given the opportunity to further enhance their physical movement skills in activities of their choice. This ensures that pupils are exploring and improving their own health and wellbeing as well as planning and preparing for the world of work.
If pupils choose PE as a certificated subject at either National 5 or Higher level they will explore and develop their performance in more detail. During this course pupils will evaluate their performance, identify areas for improvement and create development programmes to improve their performance.
Within the Senior Phase we offer a number of different accredited courses as part of the School’s Wider Achievement Programme. Pupils can select Sports Leader, Scottish FA: Practical Refereeing and the Wellbeing Award. Sports Leaders receive a number of awards during their course such as, First Aid, Tri Golf, TOPs training, Handball and Positive Coaching Scotland.
