Cork Compass

In Term 1, we studies Electicity and Magentism as part of our Science work.  Because we are active learners in Tannochside, we made a cork compass to learn more about the properties of magnets.

To make a Cork compass, you need to

  1. Fill the bowl with water.
  2. Stroke the needle with the magnet. Always stroke in the same direction, and you may need to do it about 50 times to properly magnetise your needle. You can test if the needle is magnetised by using it to pick up a pin.
  3. Push the needle through the cork, across its diameter.
  4. Place the cork and needle in the bowl of water.

Once the compass is ready, it will always point North like an actual compass.
