CURRICULUM for EXCELLENCE:<br \/>\n\tWhat is Curriculum for Excellence?<br \/>\n          Curriculum for Excellence is Scotland\u2019s national curriculum.  It provides a coherent and inclusive<br \/>\n          curriculum from 3 \u2013 18 years wherever learning is taking place, including early learning childhood<br \/>\n          centres, schools, colleges and community learning.  It places children and young people at the heart<br \/>\n          of Scottish Education.<\/p>\n<p>         The purpose of Curriculum for Excellence is encapsulated in the four capacities \u2013 to enable each<br \/>\n         child or young person to be<br \/>\n\u2022\ta successful learner<br \/>\n\u2022\ta confident individual<br \/>\n\u2022\ta responsible citizen and<br \/>\n\u2022\tan effective contributor<\/p>\n<p>         These four capacities govern the entire curriculum from age 3 to 18 and aim to raise the standards<br \/>\n         of achievement for all learners.<\/p>\n<p>         Curriculum for Excellence is underpinned by the values inscribed on the mace of the Scottish<br \/>\n         Parliament \u2013 wisdom, justice, compassion and integrity. <\/p>\n<p>         Throughout Curriculum for Excellence there is a strong focus on Literacy, Numeracy and Health and<br \/>\n         Wellbeing across all aspects of learning and every teacher will support learners with the<br \/>\n         development of these, including digital literacy skills.<\/p>\n<p>        Curriculum for Excellence is defined as:<br \/>\n        The totality of all that is planned for children and young people throughout their education.<\/p>\n<p>        The opportunities for learning and teaching are governed by the Four Contexts for Learning, which<br \/>\n        ensure that the education your child receives is informative, interesting, relevant and fun.<\/p>\n<p>        These context are:<br \/>\n\u2022\tEthos and life of the school as a community<br \/>\n\u2022\tCurriculum areas and subjects<br \/>\n\u2022\tInterdisciplinary learning<br \/>\n\u2022\tOpportunities for personal achievement.<\/p>\n<p>       What are the Curriculum for Excellence levels?<br \/>\n       There are five levels and these are flexible depending on pupils\u2019 needs and abilities (some children<br \/>\n       and young people may achieve these levels earlier or later dependent on ability): <\/p>\n<p>       Early level pre-school to P1<br \/>\n       First level to the end of P4<br \/>\n       Second level to the end of P7<br \/>\n       Third and fourth levels S1 \u2013 S3<br \/>\n       Senior phase S4 to S6 and other forms of study.<\/p>\n<p>        What is the Broad General Education?<br \/>\n        The Broad General Education (BGE) is the first phase of two closely connected phases of education.<br \/>\n        The BGE phase stretches from age 3 until the end of S3 after which learners move into the Senior<br \/>\n        Phase which starts in S4.<\/p>\n<p>        Curriculum Areas and subjects<br \/>\n        The BGE is delivered via 8 curricular areas which, in secondary school cover years S1 to S3, and may<br \/>\n        be subdivided further into individual subjects.<\/p>\n<p>        There are eight curricular areas are:<\/p>\n<p>        Expressive Arts\t\t\tLanguages and Literacy<br \/>\n        Health and Wellbeing\t\t\tMathematics and Numeracy<br \/>\n        Religious and Moral Education\t\tSciences<br \/>\n        Social Studies\t\t\tTechnologies.<\/p>\n<p>        The Senior Phase<br \/>\n        The senior phase curriculum, from S4 to S6, follows a young person\u2019s broad general education,<br \/>\n        building firmly on the experiences and outcomes they will have experienced and achieved by the<br \/>\n        end of S3.  It enables them to extend and deepen their learning and continue to develop skills for<br \/>\n        learning, life and work, through qualifications and also through a range of opportunities for personal<br \/>\n        development such as awards and wider achievements.  It is designed to support young people in<br \/>\n        moving on to positive sustained destinations, whether that is college, university, training or<br \/>\n        employment.  In the Senior Phase, schools and their partners (such as colleges, employers or<br \/>\n        community learning and development providers) now have flexibility to offer a range of pathways<br \/>\n        that meet the needs and raise the attainment levels of all learners \u2013 including pupils who might<br \/>\n        previously have become disengaged from education.<\/p>\n<p>        Schools are taking a range of approaches to the senior phase and are able to offer greater<br \/>\n        personalisation and choice for young people in a variety of ways, for example by:<br \/>\n\u2022\t  designing the senior phase as a three-year experience rather than            planning each year separately<br \/>\n\u2022\t  delivering qualifications over different timescales in response to young people\u2019s needs and prior<br \/>\n\u2022\t  achievements<br \/>\n\u2022\t  developing pathways for able learners, which bypass qualifications at lower levels to allow more<br \/>\n\u2022\t  time to be spent on more challenging learning at higher levels<br \/>\n\u2022\t  providing specific and appropriate programmes that maximise achievement and attainment for<br \/>\n\u2022\t  young people planning to leave after S4.<\/p>\n<p>        Personal Support\/Career Planning<br \/>\n        From 3-18 years, learners are supported to achieve their full potential and, as they progress through<br \/>\n        broad general education into senior phase, to plan and prepare for further learning, training or<br \/>\n        employment.  All schools and nurseries in North Lanarkshire are working hard to raise standards so<br \/>\n        that children and young people will develop all of the skills necessary to continue to be successful<br \/>\n        when leaving school and entering the world of higher education, training or work.  As part of<br \/>\n        developing skills for learning, life and work, young people will be offered careers information advice<br \/>\n        and guidance to ensure they leave school and enter a positive post-school destination of higher<br \/>\n        education, further education, pre-employment training, employment (including modern<br \/>\n        apprenticeships), activity agreement or volunteering.<\/p>\n<p>        Assessment and Reporting<br \/>\n        Assessment is an important part of the Curriculum for Excellence and, at all levels, pupils\u2019 progress is<br \/>\n        closely monitored by teachers and staff.<br \/>\n        In turn, teachers and staff work with pupils to reflect on their results, looking at their strengths and<br \/>\n        learning needs, agreeing next steps and action based on these.  As they progress, pupils become<br \/>\n        more involved in this process, as they develop the skills to make effective judgements on their own<br \/>\n        learning, developing personal expertise that will be important to them throughout life.  Assessment<br \/>\n        also helps teachers plan learning experiences which are motivating and challenging. As language is central to children\u2019s intellectual, emotional and social development, it has an essential role across the whole curriculum. <\/p>\n<p>The school adheres to NLC\u2019s Active Literacy policy. Through planning, we make links across the curriculum encouraging the children to engage in interdisciplinary learning projects.<br \/>\nWe focus on \u2018how much\u2019 and \u2018how well\u2019 our children have learned by encouraging depth of learning, ensuring appropriate challenge and providing opportunities for children to apply their skills in unfamiliar contexts.<br \/>\nHence, emphasis is placed on making meaningful connections across the curriculum to encourage the transfer of skills and to deepen learning while avoiding unnecessary repetition.<br \/>\nWe try to give the children first-hand learning experiences through out-of-school field work, educational visits and speakers coming in to school.  All pupils have the opportunity to become part of our Pupil Council, Growth Mindset, Languages, Health Education, Enterprise, Community Links, Outdoor Learning, Media, Celebrations of Faith or Junior Road Safety committees.<\/p>\n<p>Our children benefit from two hours of P.E. each week which is in line with Scottish Government recommendations.<br \/>\nAt present we hold the Gold Award for Health Education and we have won our 3rd green ECO Flag.<br \/>\nTo encourage pupils\u2019 fitness we have a variety of after-school clubs and \u201cWalk to School\u201d weeks throughout the school year.  <\/p>\n<p>We have a current and well established Global School Partnership with Namulenga Girls\u2019 School in Malawi. Through our global school partnership our children have gained a deeper understanding of another country and culture and their rights and responsibilities as global citizens.  In future we hope to allow them to develop the skills needed to work in a global economy and build a fairer, more sustainable world.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership is of mutual benefit for both schools. Whilst it is recognised in our partnership we are not similar in terms of resources, each school is fully committed to sharing culture, experiences, skills and knowledge which are abundant in both schools.   We have achieved Bronze Status as a Rights Respecting School.<\/p>\n<p>I.C.T. is used across all areas of the curriculum. We have achieved the Digital Award for Schools in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>9.\tADDITIONAL SUPPORT NEEDS:<\/p>\n<p>1.\t   St. Bernadette\u2019s Primary School complies with the Learning (Scotland) Act 2004 as amended by<br \/>\n       \t   the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2009 and the Additional Support      for Learning: Statutory Guidance 2017.<\/p>\n<p>2.\t North Lanarkshire Council\u2019s policy is contained within \u201cSupport for Learning Policy into Practice<br \/>\n 2\u201d, a copy of which is available in the School. In line with North Lanarkshire Policy, we operate a system of staged intervention to support our children.<\/p>\n<p>Staged Intervention Model<br \/>\n             Universal<br \/>\nWhere a child has been identified in need of support, the area of difficulty will be specified and discussed with the teacher, Head Teacher, parents and the child \u2013 where appropriate. Initial support will be planned and provided for internally within the classroom setting.  This may be group or individual support.<\/p>\n<p>Additional<br \/>\nWhere more targeted support is required, this will again be provided internally within the school. Some children requiring support for learning will have a Getting it Right for Me (GIRFME) plan which will set out short and long term targets to be addressed. This will be done in consultation with parents and pupils.  <\/p>\n<p>Where support is required from agencies out with the school but within Education.  Support will be planned with the school and parents to ensure children\u2019s needs are met. <\/p>\n<p>\tIntensive<br \/>\nSupport from agencies out with education such as Health or Social Work.  <\/p>\n<p>4.\tPupils with English as an additional language may be referred for \u2018English as an additional language support\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>5.\tLooked After Children i.e. children who are cared for directly or whose care is supervised by the local authority are deemed to have Additional Support Needs unless assessment determines otherwise. <\/p>\n<p>6.\tParents and young people can request an assessment to establish whether a child or young person has additional support needs or requires a Co-ordinated Support Plan.<\/p>\n<p>\t Planning<\/p>\n<p>Getting it Right for Me plans (GIRFMe) enable staff to plan for children and young people when interventions are required to support their learning and improve outcomes. Parents and pupils are an essential part of the assessment, planning and review processes and their views will be actively sought.<br \/>\nSome children and young people may require significant support from education and at least one other agency, such as health, social work and\/or voluntary agency to help them meet their learning targets.  Where this support requires a high level of co-ordination the opening of a Co-ordinated Support Plan (CSP) may be considered.<br \/>\nA CSP may be initiated by the school or another agency. Parents and young people can, if they wish, request that a CSP be considered and would be involved in the process.  Parents will receive letters from the Education Authority throughout the CSP process.  Parents and young people will be invited to take part in multi agency meetings and their views will be recorded in the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Where more intensive support for a child or young person needs to be planned for, usually when a number of agencies are involved in supporting their wellbeing then a Child\u2019s Plan may be developed. The plan will tell you what actions need to be taken and who will help with each action. It will usually be someone called a \u2018Lead Professional\u2019 who will have the job of making sure that the actions outlined in the plan take place and things get better for the child or young person.<\/p>\n<p>Dispute Resolution<\/p>\n<p>North Lanarkshire Council is committed to resolving any differences of views through discussion, dialogue and building on common ground.  If the matter cannot be resolved with the Education Authority you have the right to request mediation.  An independent mediation service is available to parents and young people through Resolve (see contact details at the back of this handbook).  Mediation is free and independent of the Education Authority.<\/p>\n<p>In the event that a disagreement cannot be resolved through mediation, then an application for Independent Adjudication (see contact details at the back of this handbook) can be made by parents free of charge.  The Independent Adjudicator will make recommendations to the Education Authority about how the dispute should be resolved.<\/p>\n<p>The Additional Support Needs Tribunal has been set up to hear appeals made by parents or young people on the decisions made by the Education Authority relating to Co-ordinated Support Plans, ASN placing requests and post school transition. All written homework should be signed by the parent\/guardian.\tAll pupils are asked to complete homework challenges on a regular basis.  These allow the children to apply learning in different contexts.  Homework tasks will include online activities in reading and maths.  If your child does not have internet access at home please let us know.<\/p>\n<p>12.\tSCHOOL ETHOS<br \/>\nThe school ethos is reflected through our Vision and Values as detailed in Section 1. Friendship Awards for good relationships with peers and Xtra Factor Awards for learning and achievements at home and in the community.<\/p>\n<p>13.\tSPIRITUAL, SOCIAL, MORAL and CULTURAL VALUES:\t<\/p>\n<p>\tReligious instruction and observance form an integral part of the religious traditions and ethos in any Catholic school, and so play an important part in the education provided in this school.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe recent publications of \u2018This is our Faith\u2019 and \u2018God\u2019s Loving Plan\u2019 are central to the teaching and development of Catholic teaching within our school and its community.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe school along with the parents and clergy prepare the children for the Sacraments of Reconciliation (First Confession) Primary 3 and First Holy Communion at Primary 4 stage with Confirmation at Primary 6\/7. Parents are invited to a meeting prior to the enrolment of children for these Sacraments. They are asked to participate as fully as possible in the preparation e.g. by working with the child on his\/her workbook at home or joining the children\u2019s liturgy group.<br \/>\n        \tFather Ricky Mallya is a frequent and welcome visitor to our school. These are awarded at special assemblies to which parents and families have been invited.<br \/>\nThrough our work in class, our R.E. programme, Health and Well-being programme and Citizenship we constantly seek to encourage positive behaviour throughout the school.<br \/>\nWe also have a Pupils\u2019 Council who listen to pupils\u2019 queries and concerns in the school and represent their views at regular meetings.   <\/p>\n<p>The relationship between teacher and child is similar to that of the parent and child, requiring mutual consideration on both sides and an acceptable code of behaviour.<br \/>\nWe operate Golden Time as a reward for all classes. Pupils can lose Golden Time as a result of inappropriate behaviour. In addition a red consequence card may be issued which will result in an additional homework activity to allow the child to reflect on their inappropriate behaviour in discussion with parents.<\/p>\n<p>Our school uses Restorative Practices to help to resolve any conflict among pupils.  Children are encouraged to discuss an issue in order to seek a solution themselves.<br \/>\nOn occasions parents will be invited into school to discuss specific issues with staff and with the child.  We make every effort to work closely with parents to ensure children\u2019s behaviour is always at an acceptable level.  Our policy aims to encourage every child to take responsibility for his\/her behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>    (ii)\tANTI-BULLYING:<\/p>\n<p>The school has an anti-bullying policy. Please contact the school office if you feel we can support you.<\/p>\n<p>21.\tATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL:\t<\/p>\n<p>\tSection 30 of the 1980 Education Act places a duty on every parent of a child of \u2018school age\u2019 to ensure that their child attends school regularly.  Attendance must be recorded twice a day, morning and afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\tRegulation 7 of the Education (School and Placing Information) (Scotland) Amendment, Etc Regulations 1993 requires each child\u2019s absence from school to be recorded in the school register as authorised or unauthorised as defined by the Scottish Government. <\/p>\n<p>At the start of each school session, parents will be asked to provide contact details including at least two emergency contact numbers.  Parents are required to inform the school if these contact details change during the course of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Excellent attendance is expected from everyone.  Attendance rates can often be an indicator for pupil achievement in school \u2013 children who attend well are much more likely to progress well in school.  Please help your child to be successful in school by ensuring they attend everyday as far as possible.  Where a child has a prolonged absence due to a medical condition, alternative arrangements for education will be made. (See Medical &amp; Health Care).<\/p>\n<p>Parents and carers are asked to inform the school if a pupil is unable to attend from the start of the school day on the first day of absence.  Failure to do so will result in school staff accessing all contact numbers provided for the child.  In terms of child safety police will be contacted if all attempts to locate the child have been exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\tParents\/carers should be asked to inform the school by letter or telephone (or ParentPortal) if their child is likely to be absent for some time, and to give the child a note on his or her return to school, confirming the reason for absence.<\/p>\n<p>     (a)\tFAMILY HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME:<br \/>\n\tEvery effort should be made to avoid family holidays during term time as this both disrupts the child\u2019s education and reduces learning time.  Parents\/guardians should inform the school by letter of the dates before going on holiday. <\/p>\n<p>\tAbsences will be classified as authorised only in exceptional circumstances.  Such circumstances may include:<\/p>\n<p>A family holiday judged to be important to the wellbeing and cohesion of the family, following serious or terminal illness, bereavement or other traumatic events.<\/p>\n<p>A family holiday classified under the \u2018authorised absence\u2019 category will not include such reasons as:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tThe availability of cheap holidays<br \/>\n\u2022\tThe availability of desired accommodation<br \/>\n\u2022\tPoor weather experience during school holidays<br \/>\n\u2022\tHolidays which overlap the beginning or end of term<br \/>\n\u2022\tParental difficulty obtaining leave (except in cases where evidence is provided by the employer that it cannot accommodate leave during school holidays without serious consequences.)<\/p>\n<p>Family holidays with the above similar characteristics will be classified as unauthorised absence.<br \/>\nWhere the head teacher\u2019s prior agreement has not been sought the absence will automatically be classed as unauthorised.<\/p>\n<p>All absences are carefully monitored by the Head Teacher where a concern arises.  Every absence must be covered by a phone call or letter.   Late-coming, too, is recorded.<\/p>\n<p>Please note we have an answering service for early morning callers.<\/p>\n<p>(b)\tEXTENDED LEAVE WITH PARENTAL CONSENT:<br \/>\nWhere most family holidays will be recorded as unauthorised absence (see above) extended leave with parental consent will not be considered the same as a family holiday.  Leave in such circumstances will be authorised under circumstances such as:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tExtended overseas educational trips not organised by the school<br \/>\n\u2022\tShort-term parental placement abroad<br \/>\n\u2022\tFamily returning to its country of origin (to care for a relative, or for cultural reasons)<br \/>\n\u2022\tLeave in relation to the children of travelling families<br \/>\n(c)\tEXCEPTIONAL DOMESTIC CIRCUMSTANCES:<\/p>\n<p>Parents\\carers may request permission for such leave in writing and the school may authorise such requests under the following circumstances:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tThe period immediately after an accident or illness<br \/>\n\u2022\tA period of serious or critical illness of a close relative<br \/>\n\u2022\tA domestic crisis which causes serious disruption to the family home, causing temporary relocation.<\/p>\n<p>It should be emphasised that the school investigates unexplained absence, and that the authority has the power to write to, interview or prosecute parents\/carers, or to refer pupils to the Reporter of the Children\u2019s Panel, if necessary.   A statement of the school\u2019s policy including procedures for the enforcement of attendance.<\/p>\n<p>22.\tCLOTHING AND UNIFORM:<br \/>\n\tAll North Lanarkshire schools must have a dress code which encourages pupils to dress in a way which is appropriate to attendance at school.  This dress code must not lead to direct or indirect discrimination on the grounds of race, religion, gender or disability.  Prior to drawing up the dress code the parents, pupils and staff were fully consulted.  It is the expectation of the education authority that parents will be keen to support the dress code and written agreement may be sought.<\/p>\n<p>\tOur school uniform is always proudly supported by our parents and consists of:\t<\/p>\n<p>\tBoys:\t\t\tGrey trousers, pale blue shirt, school tie and either wine or \t\t\t\t\tgrey pullover, sweatshirts.<\/p>\n<p>\tGirls:\t\t\tGrey skirt\/trousers, pale blue blouse, school tie and either wine or \t\t\t\tgrey cardigan, sweatshirts.<\/p>\n<p>\tSchool Uniform may be ordered directly from Logoxpres or School Trends via their websites.<br \/>\nPrimary 7 wear their own special ties which are available from the school.<br \/>\n\tFor P.E. lessons children must wear a blue or white T shirt, dark shorts and trainers.<br \/>\n\tP.E. bags are available to hold these items.  Outdoor P.E. kit is also required eg sweatshirt and jogging trousers.<\/p>\n<p>Clothing which is unacceptable in school under any circumstances includes items which:<\/p>\n<p>l\tcould potentially encourage factions (e.g. football colours)<br \/>\nl\tcould cause offence (e.g. anti-religious symbolism or political slogans)<br \/>\nl\tcould cause health and safety difficulties, such as loose fitting clothing, dangling<br \/>\n\tearrings, and other potentially dangerous jewellery<br \/>\nl\tare of flammable materials which may be a danger in certain classes (e.g. shell suits)<br \/>\nl\tcould cause damage to flooring<br \/>\nl\tcarry advertising in particular for alcohol or tobacco, and<br \/>\nl\tcould be used to inflict injury to other pupils or to be used by others to do so.  <\/p>\n<p>Parents\\carers in receipt of a clothing grant from the Council will be encouraged to purchase items which are in accordance with the school dress code.  Approval of any requests for such grants in other circumstances is at the discretion of the Assistant Chief Executive, Education, Youth and Communities. Information and application forms may be obtained from the Council website www.northlan.gov.uk  <\/p>\n<p>Parents\/carers are entitled to receive a clothing grant if they are in receipt of any of the following benefits: Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance (income based).  Employment &amp; Support Allowance (income related), Universal Credit (with an income below \u00a3660 per month), housing benefit (please note that the housing element of Universal Credit is not housing benefit), council tax reduction (please note that single person\u2019s discount\/council tax exemption is not council tax reduction).  The deadline for school clothing grants is 31 March 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\tWhilst in general terms it would not normally be the policy of the authority to exclude a pupil from school solely on the basis of his\/her dress, persistent refusal to respond to a reasonable dress code may be deemed to be a serious challenge to the head teacher\u2019s authority and be detrimental to the well being of the whole school community.  In such circumstances a head teacher may justify the use of the school discipline procedure.<\/p>\n<p>The council wishes to minimise claims arising from the loss of pupils\u2019 clothing and\/or personal belongings.  Parents are asked to assist in this area by ensuring that valuable items and unnecessarily expensive items of clothing, jewellery, etc, are not brought to school.  Parents should note that any claims submitted to cover the loss of such items are likely to be met only where the authority can be shown to have been negligent.<\/p>\n<p>23.\tMEALS:<br \/>\n\tMeals are prepared in keeping with North Lanarkshire Council\u2019s policy of healthy eating and served on the premises.  A varied menu is offered by the Dining Staff.  A vegetarian meal option is offered on a daily basis.<br \/>\n       \tSpecial Diet Procedures<br \/>\nDiets required as a result of a medical condition (a medically prescribed diet e.g. coeliac disease, diabetes, PKU, food allergy or intolerance) can be provided in school by our catering staff.  A medically prescribed diet form 1a must be completed and signed by the child\u2019s Registered Dietician or General Practitioner.  Procedures and forms can be accessed online through North Lanarkshire Council\u2019s website, by the school, the catering service or also in some cases by the child\u2019s dietitian or doctor.  For some conditions (PKU, coeliac) parents\/carers may be asked to supply prescription foods or attend a meeting to discuss the child\u2019s dietary requirements.<br \/>\nFor information; a vegetarian meal option is offered on a daily basis.<br \/>\nSome children with additional support needs may require food to be adapted to an appropriate texture and consistency.  In this instance the child\u2019s Registered Dietician or Speech and Language Therapist will liaise with the Head Teacher and school catering service including the nutritionist to ensure appropriate food provision. In this case a form will still need to be signed by a medical professional including a Speech and Language Therapist.<br \/>\nIt is important that the Head Teacher is aware of any medically prescribed diets within the school and, on occasion, parent\/carers may be asked to attend a meeting.<br \/>\nForms that have not been signed by a medical professional will be rejected. The form will be returned to the parent along with a letter stating the reason for the refusal and also they will be issued with a new form.<br \/>\nAny change in the child\u2019s dietary requirements must be advised through a Registered Dietitian or Medical Practitioner to the Facilities Support Services (FSS) Nutritionist. When children move to a High School or change schools FSS will need to be informed as soon as possible.\tSpecial Diets such as Vegan and ethnic diets can also be accommodated. In this case a form b should be completed and can be signed by the parent.<br \/>\nAll completed forms should be returned to the email specialdiet@northlan.gov.uk   <\/p>\n<p>The price of a school meal is \u00a32.10 (2 courses including milk). <\/p>\n<p>Other<br \/>\nChildren of parents\/carers receiving Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance (income based), and Employment &amp; Support Allowance (income related), Universal Credit (with an income below \u00a3660 per month), are entitled to a meal without charge.<br \/>\nAll P1 to P5 pupils are entitled to a free meal and free milk. Pupils in P6-P7 who qualify for a free school meal are entitled to free school milk. However, milk will be available for purchase in the school during the lunch period and at snack time. All nursery pupils are entitled to free milk and a fruit or vegetable snack.<br \/>\nInformation and application forms for free school meals can be downloaded from the council website www.northlan.gov.uk   <\/p>\n<p>Arrangements for those bringing packed lunches are made to allow all children to sit together in the dining hall.<\/p>\n<p>Information and application forms for free school meals may be obtained from the council website. www.northlan.gov.uk<\/p>\n<p>Additional Information<br \/>\no\tChildren in Primary 1 -7 are welcome to bring a packed lunch which is taken in the dining hall.<br \/>\no\tA breakfast service is offered to all pupils from 8.15am \u2013 \u00a31.00 each, \u00a31.50 family of 2, \u00a32.00 family of 3 and free to those entitled to a Free School Meal including all P1-P5 pupils.<br \/>\no\tWe operate a Snack Service at morning interval, serving a variety of healthy snacks e.g. toast, fruit etc.  Infants are encouraged to spend only 30p.<br \/>\no\tMenus are available on North Lanarkshire Council\u2019s website and from the school office.<br \/>\no\tWe now operate a Cashless system where children use a terminal to pay money onto a card which is then used for Breakfast, Snack and Lunch Times.  Money can be paid on weekly or daily but should be done before 9am.<\/p>\n<p>24.\tPLACING REQUESTS:<\/p>\n<p>You have the right to make a placing request for your child to be educated in a school other than the local school.  In December each year, the authority will advertise its arrangements for placing requests.<br \/>\nThere are sound educational reasons for trying to ensure that the transfer or admission of children to a school takes place at the start of a school session.  Other than those who are moving home to a new area, parents are advised to time any placing requests so that they take effect from the beginning of the new school session.<br \/>\nEvery effort will be made to try to meet the parental wishes, but you should note that it is not always possible to grant every placing request to a particular school.<br \/>\nOnce a pupil has reached the school leaving age the pupil, not the pupil\u2019s parents may choose which school to go to.<br \/>\nPlacing requests to Primary School does not necessarily ensure that your child will have a direct entry to the associated secondary.  Advice on this must be sought from the Primary School Head Teacher.<br \/>\nFurther information on placing requests and procedures is available from the school or the council\u2019s website.<br \/>\nParents and young people have a right under the Additional Support for Learning Act 2009 to make a placing request for their child or young person to attend a nursery (including partnership nursery), special school or special class managed by the home authority.  In the event of a successful placing request the authority are not required to provide transport.  The Act also enables parents and young people to make a placing request to attend a school\/establishment belonging to another authority. <\/p>\n<p>25.\tTRANSPORT:<br \/>\n(i)\tGeneral:<br \/>\nThe council has a policy of providing free transport to all primary pupils who live more than one mile from their local school by the shortest suitable walking route.  This policy is more generous than the law requires. This provision may be reviewed at any time.  <\/p>\n<p>Parents\/carers who consider they are eligible can apply on the Council website.  Applications should be submitted by the end of February for those pupils beginning school in August to enable the appropriate arrangements to be made.<br \/>\nApplications may be submitted at any time throughout the year but may be subject to delay whilst arrangements are made.<br \/>\nThere is discretion in certain circumstances to grant privilege transport for pupils to travel in transport provided by the authority, where spare places are available and no additional costs are incurred. <\/p>\n<p>(ii)\tPick up points:<br \/>\n   \tWhere free transport is provided it may be necessary for pupils to walk a certain<br \/>\ndistance to the vehicle pick-up point.  Walking distance in total including the distance from home to the pick-up point and from the drop-off point to the school in any one direction will not exceed the authority\u2019s limits (see above paragraph).  It is the parent\u2019s responsibility to ensure that their child arrives at the pick-up point in time.  It is also the parent\u2019s responsibility<br \/>\nto ensure the child behaves in a safe and acceptable manner while boarding, travelling in and alighting from the vehicle. In the case of early entry requests if the child is offered a place in the catchment area school, transport will be provided in accordance with the council policy stated above.<\/p>\n<p>There is a school bus leaving Greenacres at 8.33am (approx.) stopping at Strathclyde Road (Jet Petrol Station), Brogan Crescent and Ladywell Road arriving at school at 8.55am (approx).  The bus leaves school on the homeward journey at 3.05pm.<br \/>\nParents are asked to please avoid parking directly outside the school in the interest of pupils\u2019 health and safety.  Only staff cars and service vehicles are permitted to enter the school drive way. <\/p>\n<p>26.\t MEDICAL AND HEALTH CARE:\t<\/p>\n<p>\tAlthough the school nurse visits the school on a regular basis for routine checks on vision, hearing and general health, the medical examination of each child is normally in the first year of primary schooling.  Staff of Lanarkshire Health Board are in attendance.  Dental inspections are also carried out on a routine basis in primary schools and parents are offered necessary treatment for their children although they may choose to go instead to a family dentist.<br \/>\nPlease note that it is essential that parents inform the school of any particular medical requirements and of arrangements should a child have to be taken home from school.<br \/>\nIf a child takes ill or has an accident in school, parents or emergency contact will be contacted so that there will be no delay in the child receiving attention.  <\/p>\n<p>It is essential that the school has 2 names and addresses for emergency contact for each pupil.<\/p>\n<p>\tIf a young person is unable to attend a suitable educational establishment as a result of prolonged ill-health, North Lanarkshire Council must make special arrangements for the pupil to receive education elsewhere, other than at an educational establishment.<br \/>\n\tIn North Lanarkshire, children and young people are treated in the paediatric in-patient unit within Wishaw General Hospital.  It is not common for children and young people to have extended stays in Wishaw General, and therefore North Lanarkshire Council does not require a dedicated hospital education service. Children and young people resident in North Lanarkshire and in hospital in Glasgow, may access education through the Hospital Education Service (HES).<br \/>\n\tThe service is provided by Glasgow City Education Department and Social Work Services.  For further information, please contact the school.<\/p>\n<p>At times, unfortunately we continue to be troubled by head lice within the community and the school.  To help alleviate this problem requires co-operation from everyone.  Should head lice be found please report to the school immediately. They organise a variety of events e.g. Family Nights, Christmas Fayre, Pupils\u2019 Discos, throughout the school year which help to subsidise events and materials e.g. ICT equipment, our school library, outdoor jackets etc. for the pupils.  Meetings are held in tandem with the Parent Council meetings and prior to an event.
