It’s about time

Today we looked at time in maths.

we all wrote down everything we knew about time.

Rachael wanted to know how many minutes were in a year. We worked out that there are 60 minutes in an hour  and multiplied that by 24 to work out how many minutes in a day, we multiplied that by 7 then Rachael used SMILE multiplication to calculate that there are 524,160 minutes in  a year.

Jason wanted to work out how many seconds were in a year, we calculated how many seconds were in an hour, then a day, then a week then Jason used SMILE multiplication to work out how many seconds were in a year. There are 31,449,600 seconds on a year.

Chemical changes

Today we carried out a science investigation for our science topic ‘Chemical Changes’

A chemical change is when we mix 2 substances together to get something new

We added soap and water together to make bubbles. We stirred the solution in different techniques to speed up the reaction.

Our hypothesis for this investigation was:
Adding more soap would make more bubbles.

Things we had to keep the same was:

  • temperature of water
  • volume of water
  • type of soap
  • containers used
  • number of stirs

We presented our results in a table and a graph. We carried out the investigation more than once to calculate an average result. Some of the results met the hypothesis and some didn’t.

The height of fun

This week P6/7 have been learning all about measuring length. We have found out that Adam is the tallest in the class and Brooke is the second tallest, Lewis is the shortest.

we went outside to measure the new playground equipment.

The infants house is 170 cm which is 1 meter and 70 cm tall.

The juniors tunnel is 1 meter and 29 cm which is 129 cm.

the Seniors climbing frame is 173 cm which is 1 meter and 73 cm.

WE have enjoyed converting our measure between meters and cm and even used a calculator to convert from cm to inches.

Our Brown Trout

We have had a very busy week since our fish eggs were delivered. We have been taking care of them since last Tuesday and we only have one egg left to hatch. We have learned lots of facts about brown trout too.

We don’t need to feed the trout as they have a yolk sack. Cate

Only the male trout have a hook jaw. Dil

We need to keep the temperature down around 10 degrees. We keep the temperature down by adding ice bottles every day. Katie

There are 6 stages in a brown trout’s life. Lewis

They fish need oxygen to breath. Rachael

We need to de-chlorinate the water, we do this by pumping air through the water. Gregor

If the fish die we need to remove them. Brooke

We remove the dead eggs using a turkey baster. Dil

When the eggs die they turn white. Rudi
We only change 1 ice bottle at a time. Gregor
