Dear Parents and Carers, 7th September 2012
I wish to thank you for supporting the school to make sure our children are safe and protected. Good security can be frustrating at times but remains essential for everyone. You will have noticed new gates in our playground to maximise your child’s safety. Please report to the School Office if you wish to contact your child during playtimes and lunchtimes. It is my duty to ensure your child is safe at school.
Our Ragbag collection was a success and funds will be donated to our School Fund. Thank you for supporting our school.

The Teaching of Reading and Writing
As a result of the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence schools in North Lanarkshire Council have been developing active literacy approaches to teach children the skills of reading and writing. We now no longer use words tins. We do encourage our children to practise reading at home. We now use a colour-coded book banding system and our children may be asked to take a reading book home. Please don’t worry if your child does not always have a reading book at home. If you require, any further information on this please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Maguire at the school.

Annual Data Checks and ICT Forms
Please check with your child to ensure that these forms have been returned to school. Every year at this time a census takes place to ensure our records are accurate and up to date. We need these details to ensure the care and welfare of our boys and girls. Please return any outstanding forms to us as soon as possible. Thank you!

Senior Management Team
Please can I ask for your help to minimise interruptions to learning and teaching in our school? Members of the school’s management team will be available to meet with parents or deal with enquires during the following times: Mondays- 11.00 to 11.30 and 13.30-14.00 Wednesdays – 13.30 -14.00 and Fridays- 11.00-11.30. I thank you in advance for your cooperation and support. However, should you wish to arrange an appointment out with these times please contact a member of the Office staff. These arrangements will start from week beginning Monday 17h September.

Parental Consultations
Our first meeting for parents and carers this session will take place on Thursday 11th October. Your child’s class teacher will be in touch soon to organise a suitable time for you to meet after the September holiday weekend.

Parent Support Worker
Our Parent Support Worker is Kristin Carroll, who is known to some of our parents and carers. I know she is already working hard arranging events to support parents and families.

How well are we doing?
Last session, we asked you to answer some questions about your child (ren)’s learning and progress. We received 79 responses from a possible 251. Overall, the response rate was 31%. Thank you for providing us with feedback as this helps us to improve the service we provide for your child(ren).
1. I have looked at my child’s report and talked to them about it- 79 said YES
2. 79 responses indicated that they were happy with the content of their child(ren)’s report.
3. 76 responses indicated that they were overall satisfied with their child(ren)’s learning.
4. 8 responses indicated that they required more information about how to support their child’s learning at school.
We are committed to ‘Trying our very best to ensure everyone achieves success’. We value working in partnership with you to improve outcomes for our learners.

Improving our School through working together
We are improving outcomes for learners and priorities for action were identified for us to focus on through the visit of HMIe. We need to:
1. Involve children more in their learning
2. Continue to improve self-evaluation approaches to ensure consistently high-quality learning experiences for all children.
3. Continue to develop the curriculum, taking account of Curriculum for Excellence.
4. Improve approaches to meeting learning needs in the nursery class.

Children’s Eye Health
Undetected eye problems could be affecting your child’s learning at school. NHS sight tests are FREE for all children and are available at your local optician.

Pupil Committees
The children have selected new members for our Pupil Council, ECO and Health Committees. The children will represent their classmates at monthly meetings to organise events and suggest ideas to improve our school. Our children’s views matter to us!
Parental Involvement
We are always looking for ways to work together and in partnership with our community. If you feel you would like to help out at the school, please contact Mrs Johnston in the school office to arrange for a PVG Check.
School Website
You may have noticed that our current school website (www.newmains.n-lanark.sch.uk) is being updated to provide you with the latest information about our school. We are planning to publish our monthly newsletters on the school website as part of our commitment to being an ECO school and to reduce costs. Please return the slip previously issued to the school as soon as possible.

Parent Council Matters
The Parent Council held their AGM on Tuesday 4th September and appointed the following members: Chairperson: Mrs Walker Treasurer: Mrs Taylor Secretary: Mr Sandrey. Our Parent Council meets monthly and always welcomes new members. If you would like to find out more, please talk to any of the Parent Council members or drop a note into school and we will pass it to Mrs Walker. The next meeting of this term will take place on Monday 1st October at 6.30pm.

Supervision of Children before School Starts
I would like to remind everyone that we have a wonderful breakfast service, staffed by Mrs Dempster and MrsMcMillan in our school. Cereals, toast and milk are provided at a cost of 20p per day and this is great value for money. Our Janitor provides an adult presence in our playground from 8.40am to ensure our children remain safe. I would ask for your support to ensure that your child(ren) arrives to school after this time unless they are having breakfast at the Breakfast Club. Please could I also ask you to encourage your child(ren) to develop as an independent and responsible citizen by lining up in their lines without you! Thank you for your help and support in these matters.

Information Meeting for Kilbowie – Primary 7 Class
There will be a short presentation of an information DVD for parents on Monday 17th September at 215pm in the classroom. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions about this very worthwhile experience too! More details are available at http://www.ea.n-lanark.sch.uk/kilbowie/

Lunchtime Arrangements for Session 2012/13
We have made a number of changes to our arrangements for lunchtimes:
Children in rooms 14-17 who have a packed lunch will eat their lunch at ‘Newmains Café supervised by Mrs Dempster. Children in rooms 4-12 who have a packed lunch will eat their lunch in the dining hall supervised by Mr Clinton, Mrs Maguire and Miss Gray. School lunches operate with 3 sittings and each class getting a turn to go first for lunch. I would also stress that children who intend to leave the school to go down the street for their lunch must have a letter signed by a parent each day they wish to go out for lunch. (P6 and P7 children ONLY)

Every Child at Newmains Matters
* It is also important that you let us know if your child is going to be off school, the reason and the expected length of the absence. Please also help us by ensuring where possible that you call the school before 2.30pm if you would like a message passed onto your child. Thank you for your help.
* It is extremely important that we have accurate and up to date contact details for you and a daytime contact in case we have to get in touch with you. Please make sure the office has your correct home, mobile and daytime contact numbers.
* To ensure good security and to protect your child from harm, I would ask all parents and carers to report to the school office if they wish to speak to their child during playtime or lunchtime. This is in line with guidance from North Lanarkshire Council and I request your support to ensure all of our children are safe and protected. ALL visitors to the school MUST report to the school office in the first instance. Parents or guardians should not enter classrooms without permission from a member of the school’s management team.
* North Lanarkshire Council has very clear guidance in relation to dogs on school property. The only dogs permitted to be in the school playground at any time are guide dogs.

Annual Reminders
The Breakfast Club has already started, so please feel free to send your child into school at 8.20am to have cereal, toast and milk for 20p.

Please make sure that items of clothing are labelled with your child’s name – it’s difficult to tell one school sweatshirt or jacket from another, so names on clothes are really important.
If your child has a medical condition which requires them to have medication at school, please contact the school office for the necessary consent form.
Please make sure your child comes prepared for P.E with their gym kit. All jewellery must be removed during PE, as there are health and safety implications.
We are no longer permitted to advise parents of any reported cases of headlice. Parents are requested to check their child’s head regularly and treat any outbreaks as necessary.
All children who travel on the bus must have a current bus pass. If you have not applied for a bus pass yet, please pick a form up from the school office. We will give the bus passes to the children whenever we get them.
Please ensure your child does not bring expensive items such as mobile phones or i-pods to school.
We are always looking for parent helpers, so if you would like to take part in school activities, please call the office and ask to be disclosed.
Newmains Primary is a Nut Free Zone. We have a number of children who have nut allergy and as you know, this can be very serious for them. Please do not send nuts or food items containing nuts for snacks or packed lunch with your child.
Please work with us to make sure all our children are safe. Thank you.
Please remember to use the car park for dropping off and collecting your child. Better safe than sorry!

GALA DAY PLANS

9th May 2012
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Our Parent Council met last night and it was decided that our School and Nursery Class will participate by walking on Saturday 9th June 2012. It was agreed that the theme for this occasion will be the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Children who attend the School are asked to wear a white t-shirt or polo shirt. Children who attend our Nursery class are asked to wear a red t-shirt or polo shirt. Please note that you are able to choose a suitable costume for this occasion too. ( Kings and Queens ) The Parent Council also plan to provide accessories for children who are taking part in this event. I can’t believe we are in the final term of the school year! Thank you for supporting the school to make preparations for the Gala Day. I will pass this information onto our Parent Council. Transition dates for Coltness High are 29th and 30th May. Transition dates for Clyde Valley High School are 14th and 15th June. More information to follow, nearer the time. The date for our P7 disco is 19th June at St. Brigid’s Parish Centre 8-9.30pm.

Parent Council News
The next Parent Council meeting will take place on 8th May at 6.30pm in the staffroom. You are very welcome to join us! Sports News: I would like to thank Mr McArthur and Gary Dempster for their continued support of our work. Indoor and outdoor Football Festivals are now planned on a more regular basis with other schools in the Wishaw area.

Health Matters
It is very important that all children drink enough water throughout the school day. Access is provided to water coolers for children to use. Please encourage your child to stay hydrated as this also aids the learning process too! Nursery to P3 children will have fluoride varnish applied to their teeth on 14th May.

Supporting Good Causes
A pupil in P5 has asked the school to support her to raise money for Cancer Research. Please note that the children have decided to dedicate a non-uniform day on Friday 4th May to this very worthwhile cause. As always your donation of £1 is appreciated. Thank you!

Safety Matters
Please continue to help us to keep our children safe and protected.
I urge you to use the car park located at the end of School Road to drop off or collect your child from school. Please continue to remind your child about the importance of wearing their seatbelt to travel on our school buses. It is also essential that your child remains in his or her seat at all times whilst on board our school buses. Thank you for all your help!

Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you and your family enjoyed the Spring Break. We are now in the final term of this session. Almost all (90%+) attended our Parental Consultations last month to find out about their child’s learning and progress. I am very grateful to you for your continued support of all that we do in our school.
Learning Matters- Reporting
In line with Curriculum for Excellence, we have made changes to the way we report on your child’s progress. Our school will be using a reporting format in line with advice from North Lanarkshire Council. You should receive your child’s report for this session in June. Our Primary 7 children will also be compiling a Profile for their transition to High School. As you are aware from our parental consultations, we are also piloting ‘Pupil Learning Stories’ in all classes. We will be in touch soon to gather feedback from you.
Pupil Voice
Our Pupil Council conducted a survey about the colour of our school uniforms. The results indicate that children in Primaries 1 to 6 would prefer to wear GREY as their choice of colour. Our Primary 7 children would continue to wear BLACK. It is our intention to introduce GREY as the colour of choice next session.
Health Matters
Please support us to encourage your child to make sensible choices about what they eat and drink at school. Fizzy drinks and sweets attack your child’s teeth and is a major factor in tooth decay. Childsmile returns are due by Friday 4th May
Please also discourage your child from drinking high energy or sports performance drinks. All children have access to fresh drinking water on a regular basis.
A Children’s Fun Run (1k) has been organised for Sunday 13th May at Drumpeiller Park, Coatbridge for pupils in P5-P7. Please contact the School Office for a form if you would like your child to take part.
Child Protection Matters
As you are no doubt aware, it is my job to ensure our children and young people are safe and protected from harm. Recently, it has been brought to my attention that some children have been using mobile phones inappropriately or posting comments on social networking (such as Facebook) sites about our school. Please can you support the school by adhering to our Mobile Phone Policy (contact school office if you wish a copy) and by ensuring your child’s access to modern technology is closely monitored at home.
Attendance Matters
Regular attendance at school is vital for your child to make good progress. Scottish Government set 98% as the target.
Our attendance for week ending 30th March was as follows:
In P1 almost all pupils attended- (92%)
In P2 almost all pupils attended- (94%)
In P3 almost all pupils attended- (90%).
In P4 almost all pupils attended (93%).
In P5 almost all pupils attended (97%).
In P6 almost all pupils attended (98%)
In P7 ALL pupils attended. (100%).
Our current performance is 95%.
School Bus
Please remember to apply for a Privilege Pass for Session 2012/13. An Application form should be in your child’s school bag.
Spring Service Collection
Our Church collection (£124.10) will be donated to Cancer Research.
Parental Support Matters
I would like to thank those parents and volunteers who play an active role in supporting our school to provide the best service we can for our children. Parents have recently supported us with our Book Fair and this allowed each class to spend an additional £27 for their class libraries. Our Parent Council also organise Discos and various events to raise money for our funds. We need your continued support!
Parent Council Events- Can you help?
Our Parent Council has organised a bag packing fundraiser at ASDA Newmains on Saturday 5th May between 12-4pm. If you are able to help, please contact our school office and we will pass your details to Mrs Walker.
They are also holding a Prize Bingo and Disco on Friday 18th May at Newmains Bowling Green. Tickets are available from our School Office and cost £5. This includes a pie and 2 flyers.
The next meeting of the Parent Council will take place on Tuesday 8th May at 6.30pm. Please do come along and join us.
New Intake of P1- August 2012
Our new Primary 1 children are invited to the school on Tuesday 22nd May at 1.15pm to join our current Primary 1 children for a lesson Mrs Maguire will provide you with more information at a meeting for parents on Wednesday 29th May at 10.45am in the school.

Dear Parents and Carers, 21st February 2012

Learning at home and Curriculum for Excellence
Thank you for supporting our school to review our arrangements for homework. Your feedback has helped the school to devise a set of guidelines to tell you about what types of learning activities or tasks will be set and the suggested amount of time required for completion. Homework is an important aspect of learning and helps us to keep you informed about your child’s progress throughout the year. Your child’s class teacher will make arrangements with the children in their class. I do hope you find the information leaflet that we issued to be helpful. Further hints and tips from Miss Gray can be found on the homework section of our school website. (www.newmains.n-lanark.sch.uk)

We are also planning to share with you our new way of profiling your child’s learning at the Parental Consultations on Thursday 22nd March. This is in line with guidance from Building the Curriculum 5 and Curriculum for Excellence.

Peer Tutoring Project for Mathematics
Our Primary 5 and 6 classes will be participating in a special peer learning project. Your child will be involved in working in pairs to do their work. The expected benefits include raised achievement, improved motivation, increased confidence and improved teamwork. Mrs Donnelly and Miss Keating will be using this form of teaching in some lessons in the next few months.
Staffing News
Mrs Brown is expected to start her maternity leave and finishes on Friday 24th February. I have been advised by Learning and Leisure Services that Ms Wilson will be the replacement teacher for our Primary 3/4 class. As always, I will keep you up to date with information when I receive it.

Health Matters
I write to seek your support to discourage your child from buying energy drinks from the local shops at lunchtime. These drinks are not suitable for children and can impact on your child’s readiness for learning at school.

Book Fair
We plan to host our annual Book Fair week beginning Monday 5th March. Please can you help us by giving some of your time? Contact Mrs Johnston for more information.
Supporting Good Causes
We are planning to hold a ‘Denim day’ and have a bit of a ‘boogie’ on Friday 24th February to raise fund for Diabetes awareness. Please support us by donating a £1 to this good cause.

Kilbowie
The residential experience for our Primary 7 children is planned for week beginning 26th March. Please help us to ensure arrangements are in place by completing forms and sending in payment as soon as possible. There will be an opportunity to view a DVD presentation in Room 2 at the Parental Consultations on Thursday 22nd March. I will also be around to answer any questions you might have.

Sporting News
Some members of our Primary 7 class will be taking part in the annual Swimming Gala held at Clyde Valley High School on Thursday 23rd February.
Some of our P6 and P7 children will be attending a Football Tournament with
Paul McArthur (our Janitor) at Ravenscraig Sports Centre on Friday 16th March. Some members of our Cross Country team will also participate in the finals on Wednesday 28th March at Coatbridge Outdoor Centre.

A Little Reminder:
Please ensure items of clothing are marked with your child’s name on them.
Children must also remove all items of jewellery before taking part in Physical Education. Please ensure your child leaves these valuable items at home on their gym days.

Travel to School
Please remember that your child should only travel on the buses if they are in possession of a valid bus pass. Your child is not insured to travel on the bus if they don’t have a pass. Health and safety matters to us and we all need to do our a bit to ensure our children are safe and protected.
As always a good standard of behaviour is expected at all times.

Dear Parents and Carers, 1st February 2012
Where is the time going? We are always very busy here in our school. I am delighted to tell you that we had a very positive enrolment week, with early indications of around 35 children who will start Primary 1 with us in August 2012. Our Primary 7 children are beginning to prepare for their residential week at Kilbowie in Oban. Our children’s learning experiences are planned using the experiences and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence. As well as learning core skills in Language and Mathematics, they also experience two hours of high quality Physical Education. This is line with national advice. Late Coming and Attendance
We have recently been doing an attendance check and we would urge you to send your child to school every day, when at all possible. You know that if we have any concerns we will contact you. Please give your child the opportunity for teaching and learning each day. Regular attendance at school is vital for continued progress.
Parent Council News
Our next Parent Council meeting is on Tuesday 7th at 6.30pm in the staffroom. Please come along and join us! The trim trail is now being installed. More details to follow soon!

In-Service days and holidays
School will be closed on:

We will re-open on Wednesday 15th at 8.55am. We hope you have a good holiday weekend.

Curriculum for Excellence
On the In-service days our staff will be receiving further training from Lynda Keith about the latest developments and teaching approaches in Mathematics and Numeracy. We will also be exploring Building the Curriculum 5 to ensure our assessment arrangements and procedures reflect local and national advice.
Parental Consultations
We will be holding our meetings with parents on Thursday 22nd March from 3.15pm onwards. Teachers will be sending out letters soon to arrange appointment times with you towards the end of this month. Please do let us know if you can’t manage along on that date, as it helps us to time meetings better. Thank you.

Book Fair
Our annual Book Fair will be running from 5-8th March. The children will have the opportunity to look at the books and buy some, if you wish, from a good selection in the bookcases. We are looking for helpers for the book fair, so if you are disclosed and have some time during that week, please call Mrs Johnston in the office and she will include you in the parent rota. Thank you.
I’m sure the children will enjoy this event.

Buses
Please can you help us to ensure your child is safe whilst travelling to and from school? Responsible behaviour is essential to ensure that this happens. Parents and carers are responsible for their child’s conduct on the bus. Please take time to talk to your child about the need to ensure everyone is safe on our buses. Thank you for you help and continued support.

Vue Cinema- Rewarding Positive Behaviour
Primary 1/2 and Mrs Govan recently visited the Vue Cinema in Hamilton to see Puss in Boots. This was trip was to celebrate success and reward positive pupil behaviour in line with school policy.

Passport Applications
At this moment in time I am sorry to inform you that no member of our teaching staff or senior management team are able to countersign passport
applications. This is line with advice for data protection procedures.

Promoting Wider Achievement- Out of hours learning
Please encourage your child to come along to events organised for P2-P7 this term! Learning out with school hours matters too and promotes wider achievement in line with council’s continued commitment to Raising Achievement for all. * see below

Generation Science
We have planned an exciting Science workshop in line with Curriculum for Excellence (Make and Keep Sound) for our Primary 1 children. This will take place in the school on Tuesday 20th March 2012.
Disclosures
If your disclosure is nearly out of date or if you would like to be disclosed to help in the school, could you please contact Mrs Johnston in the office who will organise the process with you? Disclosures only last for 3 years, so please re-apply if yours is coming to an end.

Can you help us?
Are you able to help us by providing spare clothing for boys and girls aged 5-7 years. We need extra: * trousers *socks and *underwear.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year and best wishes for 2012. May it be a peaceful and prosperous year for everyone. A new year also allows us to reflect on our progress so far. As you know we are all ‘Trying our very best to ensure everyone achieves success’ at our school.

Staffing News
We now officially welcome Miss Allan to our school. She was the successful candidate at our recent interviews for the position of Class Teacher. Miss Allan is now a permanent member of our teaching staff. She will continue to teach Primary 2/3 for the remainder of this session. Mrs Queen also joins our team as a permanent teacher and she will teach Primary 7 for the remainder of this session too. I anticipate that Mrs Lilly will continue to teach Primary 1 until Mrs Stevenson returns from her maternity leave. As always, I will aim to keep you updated.

Registration of Infant Beginners for August 2012
Next week we will be enrolling children starting school in August. All children who will be 5 years old between 1st March 2012 and 28th February 2013 should be registered with their local school. Our sessions are: Monday – Friday, 16th – 20th at 10.45-11.45am and 1.30-2.30pm.
If you have a child who will be starting school in the new session, please come along and bring the child’s birth certificate and proof of address.(Council Tax Bill) If you know of a child who is due to start school, please pass this information to the parents. Thank you.

Nursery Applications for Session 2012/13
All children in the school term following their third birthday are entitled to a free nursery place of 5 x 2 1/2 hour sessions per week. Applications for children due to start nursery at any time in session 2012/13 should be completed and submitted to the nursery of your choice no later than 3rd February 2012. Application forms can be collected from any establishment with a nursery or by visiting North Lanarkshire Council web site (www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk.) Application forms contain details of all establishments in North Lanarkshire, which offer pre school education.

Health Matters to us!
We encourage our children to choose healthier options at playtimes and lunchtimes as a health promoting school. In line with council policy for Diet and Nutrition 2008-2012 we discourage children from dinking drinks that are high in added sugar or those that are caffeinated should be kept to a minimum. Caffeinated drinks are diuretics, which can increase fluid loss through urine. Sugary drinks should be kept to a minimum and are best consumed with meals rather than between meals, to minimise risk of dental decay.
Breakfast Club: Hungry for Breakfast
DID YOU KNOW? Research has shown that children who eat breakfast have a greater attention span than those who don’t or those who eat the wrong type of breakfast. Here at Newmains Primary we offer a breakfast service for 20p per day before the start of school so children can have a healthy and nutritious start to the day which fuels them to face the challenges ahead, helping them be more awake, alert, and ready to learn. At the same time the children can mix with their friends in a safe and welcoming environment. On arrival, a breakfast supervisor (Mrs Dempster and Mrs McMillan) will welcome them, help them to register and give them a bright, positive start to the day. Catering staff, having prepared and chilled everything in advance, are on hand to help each child make a healthy choice from the range of available options. It is the policy of North Lanarkshire Council to offer foods which meet national guidelines set out by the Hungry for Success initiative reducing the amount of sugar, fat and salt in the diet whilst increasing the intake of fruit, vegetables and fibre. We also recognise that some children have special dietary needs. Please let your school’s catering manager know and they will make every effort to accommodate your child’s needs. If you have any specific concerns orequests, for example, if your child needs a medically prescribed diet, e.g. Coeliac disease or peanut allergy, please contact the Head Teacher or Catering Services who will assist.

Primary 7 Transition Forms
These forms will be issued to your child this week. Can I remind you that if you wish to make a placing request the placing request form must be send direct to our headquarters at Kildonan Street, Coatbridge ML5 3BT.

Parent Council News- Survey of Parental Views
Our Parent Council conducted a survey of your views about current arrangements for lunchtime. From the results obtained and discussions at the last Parent Council meeting (6.12.11) the school is planning to make changes to these arrangements from August 2012. The changes are as follows:
Session 2012/13- Children in Primaries 6 and 7 will be able to use the local shops to buy their lunch. Written permission from a parent/guardian will be required each time your child leaves school at lunchtime.
Session 2013/14- Children in Primary 7 (only) will be able to use the local shops to buy their lunch. Written permission from a parent/guardian will be required each time your child leaves school at lunchtime.
A breakdown of the results of the survey can be obtained from members of the Parent Council.

Adverse Weather
Please could I ask you to:
make sure that we have your up to date contact numbers – including mobile numbers – as we can text all mobile numbers with emergency information should the need arise
discuss arrangements with your child about where they should go if the school has to close in an emergency
ensure that your child has a change of socks and shoes they can use in school if their feet get wet
be prepared to take children to or collect them from the nearest main road bus stop in case the buses can’t get into the minor roads
be extra careful with parking near the school
give us a call if your child is absent
