Third Prize – a £50 Amazon voucher for pupil child in the team

All of the children participating in the final will be presented with certificates on the day.

If your establishment is taking part, it is worth taking into account the timetable below, as there is a very short turnaround time between submissions and the notification of successful teams.

·    Tuesday 11th October – Scoring of applications, the top 6 will be selected to participate in the finals

·    Wednesday 12th October – Gillian Timmons from North Lanarkshire’s Regeneration and Infrastructure Business Team will contact successful schools and arrange a visit for the next day

·    Tuesday 25th October – Final at the Business Atrium Centre, Coatbridge 1300hrs to 1630hrs

The successful children will be able to bring one friend or family member to support them on the afternoon.  This is limited due to the audience capacity of the atrium.

SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland

SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland network continues to grow with over 430 registered clubs in primary and secondary schools across Scotland.  I have much pleasure in attaching our recent newsletter to clubs updating them on new projects and resources available.
We offer schools start-up grants, free kits and resources, invitations to regional and national events, CPD training sessions for teachers,  as well as advice provided by our team of 7 regional coordinators, most of whom have a STEM teaching background.
The team has been busy developing new STEM projects for 2011/12 which we will launch at the Scottish Learning Festival including:
· Hydrocarbons in Action – a kit to investigate oil and gas exploration and production for upper primary developed in partnership with OPITO and supported by BP.
· Science Clubbing – a range of cross-curricular projects aimed at S1/S2 clubs
· Circuit Training – a range of electronic projects for upper primary
· Junior Saltire Prize Award 2012 – the 2012 challenge brief will focus on wave energy and is open to pupils from P5 – S6, supported by Skills Development Scotland.
In addition, established favourites including  Heather’s Hut renewable energy and Lighting up Curriculum for Excellence electronics kits are still available.
We have been working in partnership with local authorities across Scotland to increase engagement with our programme and I would be pleased to discuss this with  you or your colleagues.  We may already be in touch about this.
Best wishes
Jane

GO-XL Expressions of Interest

You will be aware that in recent years we have successfully linked with Foundry Music Lab in Wishaw to produce Project X.

The new project will be run along similar lines to Project X but with a major difference.

Whereas in the past the invitation to take part was restricted to Secondary/ASN establishments, this time it is intended to ask Secondary and Primary schools to work together in clusters thus making it cross sectoral as well as cross curricular.  There will be a place set aside each year for ASN Establishments.

As we hope to be able to run this for the next 2 sessions we are restricting this session’s invitation to those schools in the south of the authority i.e. schools in the Motherwell, Wishaw and Bellshill areas.  It is intended to invite those schools in the north i.e. Coatbridge, Airdrie and Cumbernauld to take part next session.

The proposal is that the management teams and bands will comprise secondary students only with a small group of primary pupils (maximum 12) joining the band to record 2 tracks for the CD/Download and perform at the launch gig in March 2012.

The timeline for the initiative is as follows:

Expressions of Interest to Jim Lawson by close of business on Friday 16 September to lawsonj @ northlan. gov. uk (remove spaces)

Launch in Committee Room 1, to be attended by Enterprise Co-ordinators, on Tuesday 27 September from 9.30 am until 11.30 am

Start of project meetings at Foundry Music Lab during the week beginning 10 October

Download Launch gig towards the end of March 2012, exact date and venue to be confirmed

If you have any queries about any of the above information please do not hesitate to contact Jim Lawson on 01236 812626 or Lynn Taylor through First Class email.

Brand New to Enterprise this session is Rock Challenge.  This is not linked in any way to either Project X or its successor Go XL.
