FAQ – Formatting and Defragmenting a disk

Description of utility  programs including:

  • defragmenter
  • Disks need to be formatted before use, this allows the files to be stored in areas called blocks.

With use, the files and directories on a disk can become fragmented (their blocks are not longer contiguous). This animation shows how this occurs and how it can be fixed.

Defragmenting your hard drive will improve your systems performance, however, some operating systems do not require a manual start of the defragmenter.
