Interfaces – DVI

I thought I might share my morning with you. We got new HP desktops for ICT 3 yesterday, you might remember. I set up one on my desktop yesterday started it up and had to leave. When I got in this morning the machine was still powered but had a blank screen. Queue the troubleshooting

  1. Check power – fine
  2. Check cables – fine
  3. Reboot – Windows logo display then disappears.
  4. check info screen on monitor to make sure that it is not out of range (Max Resolution exceeded) – no input!
  5. shut down machine and check bios – ATI card set as default
  6. Connect VGA monitor to internal graphics card and power – result windows displays on VGA after logo display on DVI
  7. Configure machine and install ATI driver that manufacturers had forgot.
  8. Discover what I though was a HDMI is a displayport – scratch head and wonder how to link up smartboard now.
  9. Check box for cables – None
  10. Shut down and remove VGA from internal graphics card.
  11. Find a DVI Dual link cable, cable and power
  12. DVI output on main monitor – working 🙂
  13. VGA output to projector – detected but not displaying

Time taken so far, 2+ hours!

Best guess for solution, faulty dual link cable.

Why share this with you? The problem I am having is related to interfaces. When I get a solution I will post it here 🙂
