As part of their social studies topic, Primary 4 received a special visit from Mr. Joseph Witcombe, a member of the Antonine Guard. He was dressed as an auxiliary solider and told the children lots of information about his uniform and the duties of the soldiers.
He also explained how the Roman soldiers would use their shields and swords in battle.
The pupils were then given a sword and shield of their own and practised marching in the famous ‘tortoise’ formation. The visit was a great success and gave the children a real insight into the life of a Roman soldier and the significance of The Antonine wall in our local area.
