Over the course of October, S1 pupils have been intorudced to a selection of new and different languages from across Europe, all to coincide with the European Day of Languages. Pupils from Mrs McLeod’s S1 French class spent time learning phrases in German, Scottish Gaelic and Russian to give them a taste of languages other than French. Other classes learned Spanish as well as Italian. Pupils made posters with information about the different countries, and some of the pupils demonstrated their new language skills in front of the teaching staff at the European Day of Languages coffee morning.

We spoke a little of Russian, Gaelic and German in front of all the teachers for the European Language day. Me and Kali both learned these languages and we enjoyed it so much! We also did fun things in the classroom like colouring, making posters and learning how to say phrases like where we live, how old we are, when our birthday is is in a different language and the flags!

European Day of Languages happens every September 26th to celebrate the importance of learning new languages. In the Modern Languages Department we learned how to say our names, hello, goodbye, our age and our birthdays to our classmates. We hosted a Coffee Morning, where a few pupils had the chance to speak different languages and show off their new skills. The languages chosen were French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian and Gaelic. We also used a website within our class called Linguascope, where we used smartboard games to help boost our confidence. We also had a number of class and paired discussions. We enjoyed this as we were able to extend our knowledge of modern languages. Working together we were also able to show off our skills to others. Overall this was a very good experience with lots of learning experiences. This is a great way to have fun yet enjoy ourselves!
