Spotlight on European Studies

Last month, Mrs Osprery and her European Studies class carried out a project looking at France. They researched the foods, customs and landmarks associated with the country and even visited a special ‘French Cafe’ ‘ set up in the library to get a taste of what life in France is like.

Take a look at what some of the pupils had to say about the project and what they learned from it. Click on this post heading to see more.

  1. In European Studies we have learned about French food and drink. We have been researching on the internet and from textbooks.

Some of the things that we found out are that there are 362 types of cheese – almost one for every day of the year and each region produces their own cheeses . They also have smoked sausages which are kept in a barn house to provide food for over the winter.

We have watched a dvd called The Very Hungry Frenchman with Raymond Blanc, a famous French chef. We saw him skin a rabbit and we learned that his mum inspired him to cook – she is 90 years old .
We went on a website called Euroclub Schools, which has lots of facts about France . eg they spend more time eating food than us at a table, they have a healthier diet than us and that they drink wine with their meals .They also eat frogs legs and snails !

We went to the library and saw a French café with pretend food .There was pate, quiche, camembert , baguettes , fruit , smoked sausages and wine.

  2. French Food & Drink

In European Studies we have been learning about food and drink in France. Some things we have learned are that in France there are 365 types of cheese – one for every day of the year. We also learned that they smoke their sausages especially for the winter, they have a much healthier diet than the U.K and that they also are more sociable than us. The French eat frogs’ legs and snails that most Brits turn their nose up at!

We learned most of this by textbook, through looking at the Linguascope website, Euroclub Schools – another website – and we watched Raymond Blanc’s DVD “The Very Hungry Frenchman”. This involved him skinning a rabbit and him smoking some sausages. I am looking forward to watching the rest of it.

We also went to see the French food café, which had pretend Quiche, Pate, Camembert, Baguettes and Pains au chocolat and wine. It looked good enough to eat!

  3. Food & Drink

In European Studies we have been learning about French food and drink. The French love to eat and are very healthy with what they eat .The French love coffee. The French also have one cheese for every day of the year – that is 365 cheeses.

We have been watching a French documentary on ‘The Very Hungry Frenchman’ AKA Raymond Blanc who shows us working in a café training 2 college kids to be chefs .We also see Raymond Blanc cooking in France and tasting Wine. The French cook a lot more home made food than we do in the UK.

We also went to the library and visited the French café with French food like cheeses, sausage, quiche, pate, wine, croissants and crepes.

  4. French food & drink

Throughout the last couple of weeks we have been learning about French food & drink.
We have been into the French café which was set up in the library. The cafe was set up to look like a restaurant and had pretend fruit, bread, cheese and biscuits.

We have also been on the computers on to the Euroclub Schools website and the Linguascope website. We were playing games and learning numbers and names of food.

We have watched a DVD about Raymond Blanc (the very hungry French man) who is a famous chef .We found out he really likes food and wine. We have seen him taste food and wine. We saw smoked sausage hanging from the roof of an old farm shed. We also saw Raymond taste cheese and explain how they can tell when the cheese is at perfection.

We learned that the French have a better heart rate than the British. They have longer meals and they don’t just eat food to live, they live to eat food.

Before the October week we are going to have a French food tasting lesson too .
