French Connect Film Making Competition

S3 pupils studying the French Connect course this year have had an exciting opportunity to write and produce their own film! Pupils have been working in groups of four to write their very own storyboard based on a film about how being a European affects them. The groups have so far come up with fantastic ideas and produced outstanding storyboards. If any of the groups from Cardinal Newman High School are picked for the final, they win the opportunity to spend a day in Glasgow producing their film. The overall winner wins a trip to Brussels. Good luck to you all!

Cardinal Newman Pupils Make A Splash!

Last Wednesday the six pupils pictured above represented Cardinal Newman H.S in the North Lanarkshire Swimming Championships held at the Sir Matt Busby Sports Centre. Winning a handful of medals they have all recorded times to qualify for the Scottish Schools Championships held in Aberdeen in January. Details will be posted soon regarding who has been successful in gaining a place.

Netball Victory

Very well done to Miss Clyde’s Yellow netball team who have been victorious in their second league game of the season.  The girls grit and determination shone through as they defeated previous league winners Braidhurst 13-7.  This is also the first time that the Yellow Team have ever defeated their rivals in 3 years.  We wish them luck in their forthcoming game on Monday, away to Coltness. Keep up the great work girls, lets go for 3 out of 3.

S6 Fright Night Prize Winners

The annual S6 Fright Night got off to a spine-chilling start last night with all pupils arriving in terrifying, unnerving, chilling and comical fancy dress.  The group attended the school theatre to watch the extremely petrifying film ‘Insidious’.

Below are this years winners receiving their prizes from a zombified Mr Snee!

Well done to everyone who dressed up and got into the fearsome Halloween spirit.

Alteratively a group of pupils from ‘Homeroom N9’  are runners up in the creative writing category.

An awards event is being held at The Scottish Parliament on Thursday, 20 November, and our winners will be in attendance.

Huge congratulations to both winning teams.

Spanish and Hospitality

In line with the S1 Spanish curriculum on El Salvador, the Spanish department teamed up with Hospitality to make “tres leches cake”, a cake typical of El Salvador. Here are some pupils hard at work in Hospitality:

St Andrew’s Hospice Fun Run

Staff and pupils participated in the annual St Andrew’s Hospice Fun Run in September. This event has been a long-standing tradition within the Cardinal Newman school community. So far, the school has raised over £2000. Thank you to all who contributed.

Living For Sport

Sky Sports Living for Sport is a free secondary schools initiative undertaken in Cardinal Newman H.S that uses sport stars and sport skills to:

  • Boost confidence
  • Change behaviours
  • Increase attainment
  • Improve life skills

“Sport helps people think, helps people listen, helps people to speak up and helps people work together. Different sports inspire different people but one thing is true: there’s a sport for everyone and it can change your life.”

DARREN CAMPBELL
Sky Sports Living for Sport Ambassador

Cardinal Newman High School has been involved with this initiative for the last eight years with hundreds of pupils in the school benefitting. The programs rationale is to try and create success for the pupils involved by targeting a broad range of topics including homework, effort, behavior, latecoming and attendance. This focus then has been proven to raise attainment of the pupils that have the opportunity to be on the program.

Each pupil is given a success timetable which needs to be filled out by each of their class teachers on a period by period basis. The class teacher decides whether the pupil has done well in achieving their target for the week (homework, effort, behavior, latecoming and attendance). The pupil will receive points from each teacher during the week and if they achieve a certain amount, they get 2 extra periods of PE during the Living for Sport time on Fridays.

During the extra PE time, the pupils get to perform in an array of activities from basketball to mountain biking. They are also taken on school trips during the year which offer a greater incentive to achieve their agreed targets each week.

Pupils that have completed a year in the program and others that have left school have provided testimonials below:

“Living for Sport has helped me behave better”.

“I have enjoyed being on Living for Sport and it has improved me in many different ways”.

“Living for Sport was the best thing that happened to me at school”.

“I really enjoyed doing Living for Sport, I think it really helped me in terms of doing sports and to behave more and take part because I knew I had to work for my place”.

“It has really helped me in my behaviours in school and get along with my teachers. It has been my favourite thing that has happened to me in secondary school”.

“It has helped me get better grades in school and even get an award!”

“I like Living for Sport as it has helped me get along with people and talk to them better. I like the program and hope I can do it again next year”.

“It has made me do better in school, it’s a good thing to have”.

SkySports Living for Sport provide each school with an athlete mentor who visits the school for a half day and a full day during the year. This mentor has usually represented Great Britain at the Olympics or Scotland at the Commonwealth Games. They spend time with the focus group and provide others in the school with the opportunity to meet them and listen to their story of how they became successful in their sport. This has been a memorable experience for all involved in the program plus the lucky pupils that get to meet the mentor out with the program.
