Glow SkyDrive from a NLC desktop

STATUS – Not working

Right this is just my thoughts and tests on getting SkyDrive Pro up and working in NLC. I plan to edit this document as I go along, so this will be a journey to getting it working, the final solution will appear in a subsequent post.

All of these tests were performed on a NLC build Windows 7 64bit machine using IE10 and Office 2013, this is as close to a reference machine as possible. I am logged in using my normal staff account and using my non sca account in Glow, this will replicate conditions that teachers find themselves in.

  • I gave up trying to get the skydrive pro app from office 2013 working. The folder redirection and the way the user profile is configured was not letting use the network area, so syncing would only be to the local machine.
  • I created a folder from inside Glow’s O365 (will now just be referred to as 0365) and dragged some files from the HD to it.
  • I added another user with read permissions
  • I then clicked the sync button which fired up the skydrive pro app and added skydrive pro to my favourites.
  • I waited for the sync to finish before checking the location C:\Users\MYUSER\SkyDrive Pro
  • From the favorites window I changed the properties of the skydrive pro shortcut to h:\skydrive and moved the files manualy to this location.
  • The skydrive app just shows the same old file location with no files, guessing that a reboot is required to pick up location from shortcut (although it might be stored in the registry), back after the reboot
  • And the result is it never work. I have fired up regedit with my dollar account and found a setting called LocalSyncClientDiskLocation I have changed that to h:\skydrive. I’m not sure this will work as I am not changing the details of the current user as applied to my non dollar account.
  • *Sigh as part of a reward for fiddling my files have disappeared from Glow. I have copied them back to the C:\Users\MYUSER\SkyDrive Pro area and resync’d to get them back.
  • My shared with everyone folder now isn’t… I’ll worry about that later.
  • You know what this skydrive is great I just created two new files (one in each location) with the name as describing the location, and it just appeared on the SkyDrive (like dropbox). This is the solution I have been after I just need to get it working.
  • Changed the name of the H: folder to SkyDrivePro and updated favourite this is to avoid possible conflict with skydrive consumer ed
  • Ever feel you are fighting a losing battle?
  • OK clever work around bit (hopefully), my plan is to stop the sync, subst a drive on I: to the local area, set back up the sync, exit the app, redo the subst to my homedir.
  • Batch file created to Subst I: [Check]
  • Sync stopped, started and file location changed to I: [Check]
  • Waiting for sync to stop [Check]
  • Create new file on O365 [Check]
  • Run Sync from O365 …. Do the whole thing again as I miss typed the subst [CHECK]
