We have been very busy this week learning lots
about science, technology, engineering
and maths!
Discovery Zone:
We have really enjoyed working in the Discovery Zone in the infant open area.
We had a chance to investigate floating and sinking, made
circuits, labelled a flower, explored magnets, talked about our
senses and made Lego hearts.
Coding:
Some Primary 5, 6 and 7 Digital Leaders showed us how to code on the iPad using the app ‘Scratch Jr’. We enjoyed making our own animations and moving cartoons. Thanks to the Digital Leaders for showing us what to do! Mrs McFarlane was also really impressed!
Three Little Pigs Building Challenge:
We read the story of ‘the Three Little Pigs’ and decided we didn’t like some of their house designs! We discussed what went wrong and how we could make them better.
We decided to make our own houses! We looked at some materials and discussed if they were wind proof or water proof.
We then made a plan for our house…
We had great fun building and testing our houses!
We then evaluated our designs:
House Building
We had a visitor from Ashleigh construction who helped us to build houses using marshmallows and cocktail sticks. We had a great time and worked together as a team to build a house. It was very tricky not to eat the marshmallows!
Extracting DNA from strawberries
On Wednesday Miles visited our class and helped us to take DNA from strawberries. We were feeling very pleased with ourselves and felt like real scientists!
Musical Instrument Challenge
Miss McMath gave us a challenge… we had to make our own musical instrument and create our own band!
First we had to come up with a band name…
Then we investigated the materials we could use.
Â
and got to work making our instruments!
Then we presented our band poster and played a song using our instruments.
QR Codes
The digital leaders showed us how to scan QR codes using an app on the iPad. When we scanned the code, it came up with a word. We had lots of fun finding them!
STEM showcase!
We had lots of fun displaying all of our hard work and looking at what the other boys and girls had been up to. What a lot of work, and a fantastic week!
