Mrs McKechan and P1b
The children in Primary 1b have had a busy first few weeks and are now familiar with our class routines. In term one we will have P.E. indoors on a Monday and outdoors on a Thursday. Homework, including new reading books will be issued on a Monday and collected in on a Friday. Please bring blue book bags with reading books and sound pockets every day, as the children will often use the contents in class. Please return library books every Friday. We will also learn outdoors so please can all pupils bring a jacket every day.
Learning in Term 1
Literacy and English
In term 1 Primary 1 are learning to recognise and form the 42 letter sounds. We are using Jolly Phonics games and activities every day. We are identifying the sounds at the beginning and end of 3 and 4 letter words and we are starting to blend simple words. Our literacy activities are active and varied, including using sand, water, painting and iPads. We are also focusing on adding lots of detail to our drawings to describe our experiences.
Numeracy and Mathematics
Initially Primary 1 are learning to recognise, count, sequence and form numbers to 10. Later in the term we will identify and order numbers to at least 20. We will match numbers to items counted, sort and order sets and look at number sequences to identify numbers before/after and between. As this first term progresses we will also be learning to add within 10. We will discover the names and properties of 2D shapes as well as recognising and creating patterns.
This term we will be focusing on Scotland through the topic of Katie Morag. We will take part in various activities which include designing tartan, role-play in Katie Morag’s post office, creating cottages with block construction, junk modelling and using drawing tools.
Health and Wellbeing
This term we will be learning about the importance of friendship. We will consider how we can be a good friend. We will also be reinforcing our Golden Rules within weekly circle time activities. Primary 1 will also explore different feelings and be given opportunities to talk about feelings.
