Teamwork 🤝

Last week in health and well-being we learned about the nutrients in food and how they benefit our body. Therefore, we decided to apply our learning to investigate food labels. We had an interesting discussion about the purpose of food labels looking at different diets, allergies and life choices.  We then worked in teams, using the information contained on labels, to determine if foods are healthy or unhealthy and to help us make healthy food choices.

We have also continued to develop our communication and teamwork skills in maths. We worked together to solve difficult problems and some of us applied our learning and developed our confidence by teaching a small group.

Circuit Training 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️💪

Today we really enjoyed our circuit training session. We rotated around different stations, working different parts of our bodies and timing our progress. We learned how to correctly hold a plank and do sit ups which worked our core muscles. We did push ups and tricep dips to improve our upper body strength and squats to strengthen the muscles in our legs. We also did some cardio such as burpees, star jumps, hula hoops and shuttle runs. We even managed to find some hula hoop pros 😄

Another day in P6 😀

Today we learned to create an Excel spreadsheet to record and compare data. We learned how to format cells and change the cell width. We also learned to use the SUM function to calculate our data. We have been working on making our spreadsheets look professional and we think we have definitely achieved this! 💻

In literacy, we have been listening and reading the lyrics of well known songs. Today we listened to Pompeii by Bastille and developed our inference skills and learned new vocabulary through this.

Check out some of our band members in action below!  🎺 🥁

Adaptation 🦅🦉

Today we have enjoyed learning about adaptation and how animals, plants and other living things have changed over time so that they better suit their habitat. Charles Darwin studied the wildlife on the Galápagos Islands and noticed that finches on the islands showed variation in their size, claws and beaks. We learned that the beaks were different depending on the local food source and we therefore predicted and tested which beak would be best for each food type. We had 5 different food types and 5 different beaks. At each location, we predicted which beak we thought would work best for that food, then tested the beaks to see if our prediction was correct, recording our results as we went along.

Mad About Fractions!

This week, we have begun discussing equivalent fractions. Can you remember what an equivalent fraction is? We have applied our learning to create our own equivalent fractions game. We have also been learning to add fractions and will continue to challenge ourselves with this next week.

So Far This Term

We are in our second week back after the Christmas holidays and we hope you all had a great New Year!

We have kicked off this year with our Scots language topic and we have all decided on a Burns poem to learn. We will be learning The Twa dogs, Westlin Winds and The Rights of Women.  In maths, the class have been focusing on fractions. Also, we touched on speed, distance and time. We recorded times for ourselves in ten metre races and used Microsoft Excel to figure out our speeds by dividing the distance by the time.

In literacy, we are learning about explanation writing. We did comprehension through music to Bastilles Pompeii track and had to explain what was going on. The class have only just started the literacy topic so we haven’t learnt much yet.

In Art, we are learning about Op art. Op art is a type of art that uses optical illusions, colours and lines to create something that we think we see but we don’t. The class are focusing on op artist Bridget Riley.

In science, we are learning about evolution and inheritance. We did a task where you had to mix a famous male and a female and drawn what we thought the child would look like and what they would inherit from the adults.

End of Year Quiz

Today we teamed up with P7 for an end of year quiz. Miss Armstrong and Miss Howlett spent a long time creating the quiz and we all really enjoyed it. There was a news round, real or no-real round, guess the music round and finished off with ‘reveal the picture’. The winners were Jenna, Anna, Freya. Molly and Dillon from P7 and Rachel, Hamish, Adam H from P6.

Swift Code

We have really enjoyed learning to code using Swift. We have learned to use commands, sequences, functions and loops. We have also learned to write our own code!
