Our Week!

Primary 1/2 have had great fun this week. We learned about waterproof materials in Science and conducted an experiment. Mrs Docherty had a piece missing from her umbrella and we discovered that plastic was the best material for it so that she wouldn’t get wet.

We also visited Skelmorlie Library where we played Book Bingo, took part in an Easter egg hunt, played Maths games on the iPads and enjoyed reading some books.

On Friday it was Sport Relief Day. We joined Early Years in their Glowstick Disco – we had a great time!! Then we all took part in the big run in the afternoon.

See our pictures and videos below.

Have a great weekend!

A Happy Week!

Last week we celebrated World Book Day. We all got to dress up as a character from our favourite books.

This week we worked in groups and started making 3D houses using junk modelling. We are still working on these!

In Science, we had an experiment where we had to test the strength of certain materials. We had to predict what might happen. We made new houses for the 3 Little Pigs out of marshmallows and toothpicks, lego, wooden sticks and blu tack, bathroom tiles, straws and playdough and sticky tape, lolly sticks and building blocks. The Big Bad Wolf (aka The Big Bad Hairdryer) tried to blow down our houses! We discovered that the strongest materials were the lego and tiles because they were sturdy and stable.

In French, we learned the names of some classroom objects. A pen is ‘un stylo.’ A pencil is ‘un crayon.’ A ruler is ‘une regle.’ A pencil sharpener is ‘un taille-crayon.’ A rubber is ‘une gomme.’

In Numeracy, Primary 2 learned a song to help them with their 2 Times Table. They are learning to recall the multiplication facts. Primary 1 were learning to count on to help them add numbers together.

In Literacy, we listened to the story of Steven the Snake. He found it difficult to talk to his friends who didn’t try to listen to him. Steven the Snake drew a picture for them and his friends understood that he was trying to organise a surprise party for his friend Andy the Antelope. We pretended to be Steven the Snake and we wrote invitations to Carole the Crocodile and Harry the Hummingbird to invite them to Andy’s party.

Final quote of the day:

“Be good at school!” – Mairi

“When we come to school, be happy!” – Angus

Junk Model Challenge

As part of our Houses and Homes Topic, soon we will be making 3D houses (or even one big large house!) Please bring in a variety of cardboard boxes you may not need. These can be big boxes, small boxes including cereal boxes, packaging boxes and even just plain old cardboard boxes. This would be much appreciated. Thank you!! 🙂

“We love being at school!” – Jessica

This week, the P1s were learning how to add numbers together. We had a new play area for Maths which we used. We also used numicon, logs and pinecones to help us add together.  P2s learned to count on and back in 2s and we also learned about odd and even numbers. We were introduced to Odd Todd and Even Steven. Even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8. Odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. We played a game called ‘Popcorn’ to help us with this.

In Writing, we wrote letters to someone who we think makes a good friend. We wanted to make that person feel happy about themselves.

In Topic, we were using the laptops to look at houses for sale. We had to record the information we found using tally marks. We found that the most popular type of house online was a detached house.

Our Activity Room has changed a lot and we are very happy about this! We now have a Maths and Numeracy corner, a Role Play corner, Reading Corner, a Reading Den, ICT Corner, Writing Corner and a Construction Corner. In our Role Play area just now, we are pretending to be Estate Agents. We are delighted to have more space in this room.

On Friday morning, our Scots poem finalists recited their poems in the Largs Cronies Competition. Well done to Kara in P1 and Brodie in P2 who won a medal. Everybody did extremely well and Mrs Docherty is SUPER proud of you all!

Our final quote of the day:

“Be happy when you come out of school!” – Simran

“Have fun every day!” – Catalina

Our week in Skelmorlie

This week, Primary 1 learned about the Days of the Week and had to put them in the correct order. Primary 2 learned how to make quarter past on an analogue clock and a digital clock. For example, quarter past 10 would be 10:15. Primary 2 are also learning about the Months of the Year.

In RE, we learned that people have different religions and they believe in different things. In Health and Wellbeing, we learned about foods that are healthy and unhealthy. We did this with Mrs Finlayson.

In Science, we did an experiment using vinegar and baking powder with Ms McGee. We have predicted what we think will happen, but it’s going to be a surprise!

In Phonics, Primary 1 learned the oo sound. Some of Primary 2 learned the e-e (magic e) sound. For example, Eve, athlete, complete, delete. In Handwriting, we also practised writing our sounds.

We are also learning about the importance of telling the truth.

In our topic, we made 2D shape houses using – squares, triangles, rectangles and circles. We also went a walk around Skelmorlie to look at the different types of houses. We saw bungalows, semi-detached, terraced, detached houses and flats. We also saw a post office, shops, a caravan, a field, traffic lights, workmen, the library and the school (of course!). We saw a really big house which we thought looked like a mansion. Have a look at our pictures of our walk below.

Our final quote of the day from Dylan in Primary 2:

“Be happy every day.”

What a positive thought! Have a lovely holiday weekend everyone 🙂

What we learned last week!

In Phonics, we all learned different sounds. These were: sh, ch and th for P1. The P2s learned a-e and ai.

In Maths, we learned how to tell the time using analogue clocks. We learned about o’clock and half past. Some of us learned how to write the time digitally.

Our topic this term is Houses and Homes so we have been learning all about different types of houses. Some of these are flats, detached and semi-detached houses.

We wrote letters to Bebop the Alien this week. He sent us a letter asking about what kind of houses we live in and he also wanted to know what our local area of Skelmorlie is like. We wrote letters back to him.

In P.E. we have been doing Gymnastics and have been using the apparatus and equipment to practise our rolling, balancing and travelling.

Thank you 🙂
