Sir Quentin Blake Display

Week Beginning 13/09/21

On Monday, it was Roald Dahl day and for this we decided to focus not on the stories but more the illustrations of Roald Dahls books by Sir Quentin Blake! To begn with we simply had a look at a variety of Quentn Blakes illustrations in lots of different books:

Once we had looked at these texts and examined the similarities and recurring techniques in Blakes illustrations, we then decided to give it a go ourselves. We watched a video of an artist who demonstrated how to draw faces in the style of Sir Quentin Blake. After atching and a quick discussion, we tried a few faces of our own:

I think we can all agree the children were doing a fantastic job with their illustrations. What makes it even better is the concentration and more importantly, the smiles on the children’s faces as they made their own creations.

Once we had practiced the faces we went onto creating full character and background illustrations. Once again we watched an artist demonstrate this before we then went onto to try it by ourselves. Some of us chose to draw ourselves, some drew others in the class and some even re-imagined some of their favourite characters from other stories in the style of Sir Quentin Blake.

Once we had drawn them there was one final step: painting! Sir Quentin Blakes illustrations are famously completed in water colour so that’s exactly what we did too. We watched one final video demonstrating the correct techniques for water colour painting before we completed our own:

Once again I think it is clear to see just how much fun we had as a class completing these illustrations. And now, for the reveal of the final product:

As you can see the children done a phenomenal job creating their own Quentin Blake illustrations and even Mr M had fun joining in and creating his own too! These illustartions have turned out amazingly well and will make an excellent display in our classroom, a picture which you will be able to see below really soon!
