The Vikings

Over the last few weeks, we have been enjoying on our new topic ‘The Vikings’. We have learned about viking life and compared it to our life. We have used the iPads, laptops and books to gather facts for our posters. We have decorated a viking longship and enjoyed using our thumbs to make bowls out of clay. We used the modelling tools to create patterns on them and once they dry we will paint and varnish them.

Katie Morag and other new topics

At Primary 2A this week, we have been very very busy.  We have been doing lots of Katie Morag topic work.  We have been learning how to Scottish line dance and we have been making a new wall display starring Alecina the sheep from the Katie Morag books!

We have also been doing lots of water experiments to help us learn about volume and capacity.  One of the new units of measure we have been speaking about is a litre.  We used lots of juice bottles to carrying out our experiments and we now know how to find these in the Supermarket.

In our Hinduism and wedding topics, we have been learning about the clothes that people wear and the different traditions.  We have been amazed at how other cultures celebrate at weddings and have enjoyed their different stories.  In this topic, we have also learned about Diwali, the Festival of Light and a story about Rama and Sita.  It has been great to learn all of these new things.

We are all very excited for our Millport trip tomorrow.  We are looking forward to hearing about other boys and girls’ experiences of island life, just like Katie Morag!  We will let you know how we get on!

World Book Day trip

On Thursday we visited Kilwinning Library for World Book Day.  We travelled there in a mini bus.  This was ideal because it was a cold, windy afternoon.

At the library, we played lots of games to help us with our literacy.  One of the games was money dominoes, which was great fun!  We also enjoyed playing a word dice game and one with ladybirds and crocodiles.  We were certainly kept very busy.

After having a turn at all the different games, the lady who works in the library said we could read a book for the last ten minutes.  This was very relaxing to finish off a busy afternoon.  We could have a rest and read a book in a nice wooden hut, on a padded seat or in the pretend fort!

The ladies at the library were very helpful and at the end of our visit, explained how we could join and get our very own keycard to take out books.

Thank you to the library staff and to Mrs Gentles for their help.  This was very much appreciated!

Pennyburn Post Office

P2a visited Pennyburn Post Office last Thursday. Despite the terrible weather, we all had a great trip. Luckily there were plenty of waterproof jackets and trousers to keep us dry. Unfortunately, our socks and shoes got wet, but they were dried on the classroom radiator :).
We learned that a letter with a first class stamp will take one day to be delivered and a letter with a second class stamp will take 3 days to be delivered. We also learned that every address has a postcode to help the post office deliver the letters to the correct address. The manager told us that to post a letter abroad you need to put on a different type of stamp.
Thank you very much to Pennyburn Post office and our fabulous parent helpers for all of their support and help on this trip.
