Katie Morag

Our topic this term, until Easter will be Katie Morag. We will be reading and studying several of the Katie Morag books by Mairi Hedderwick. We might even have the chance to watch some of the BBC series of episodes based on the books.

We found a letter in our postbox. All of the primary 1s went out to the post office to read it. Katie Morag had sent us a letter with a challenge.

We worked out the challenge and sent her a reply. We included a picture of ourselves and labelled it with our names so she would know who we were.

Katie Morag sent us a story. “Katie Morag Delivers the Mail”. We enjoyed reading this together.

We all wrote letters to say thank you for her story and she replied with a map of the Isle of Struay, where she lives. We thought up lots of questions to ask Katie Morag about Struay and wrote these in a letter.

Visit to the Post Office

As we have been reading about Katie Morag delivering the mail, we thought it would be fun to go to our local post office and learn about how to post a letter and how it gets delivered all over the country. We also posted our own letters to our friends and family.

Katie Morag has sent us lots of things including a postcard, a leaflet about Struay and a new book, all about her Two Grandmothers. We have had great fun making our own postcards and leaflets about Kilwinning to send back to Katie Morag. We have also been running our own tourist office during soft start and IDS times. We have made train tickets, tickets for outings and served lots of customers going on their holidays.

While working on Katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers we have been comparing island and mainland life. As part of this we have made several island including an individual one, a small group play dough island and a group junk model.
