With a heightened awareness resulting from COPS 26 and close links to Outdoor Learning, Gardening, Citizenship and<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/na\/nacstemhub\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=410&amp;action=edit\"> The <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0XTBYMfZyrM\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> it is becoming a prominent theme with links running through the Curriculum for Excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Learning for sustainability (LfS) is an approach to learning, life and work. It enables learners, educators, schools and their wider communities to build a socially-just, sustainable and equitable society. An effective whole school and community approach to LfS weaves together global citizenship, sustainable development education, outdoor learning and children\u2019s rights to create coherent, rewarding and transformative learning experiences. LfS is fully embedded in the General Teaching Council for Scotland\u2019s Professional Standards and is recognised as an entitlement for all learners.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Learning for Sustainability is an international and national priority in education.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>In Scotland, the Professional Standards for Teachers are underpinned by Learning for Sustainability as a key cross-cutting theme; interdependent with the other key cross-cutting themes of Values and Leadership.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>GTC Scotland has worked with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/learningforsustainabilityscotland.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learning for Sustainability Scotland<\/a>, Scotland\u2019s United Nations University-recognised Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development, to develop resources to help teachers to explore Learning for Sustainability in the Professional Standards for Teachers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gtcs.org.uk\/professional-standards\/key-cross-cutting-themes\/learning-for-sustainability\/\"><strong>The General Teaching Council for Scotland Learning for Sustainability Hub<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Muir report examines the case for change and the role of Learning for Sustainability in Curriculum for Excellence. He identifies<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">The need for the development of values,<br \/>\nattitudes, knowledge and skills to be<br \/>\nsignificantly strengthened in the context<br \/>\nof Learning for Sustainability, the bringing<br \/>\ntogether Education for Sustainable<br \/>\nDevelopment (ESD), Global Citizenship<br \/>\nEducation (GC) and Outdoor Learning (OL).<br \/>\nThis was felt to be particularly important given<br \/>\nthe increased profile and relevance of climate<br \/>\nchange to the current and future generations<br \/>\nof children and young people.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/binaries\/content\/documents\/govscot\/publications\/independent-report\/2022\/03\/putting-learners-centre-towards-future-vision-scottish-education\/documents\/putting-learners-centre-towards-future-vision-scottish-education\/putting-learners-centre-towards-future-vision-scottish-education\/govscot%3Adocument\/putting-learners-centre-towards-future-vision-scottish-education.pdf\">Putting Learners at The Centre: Towards a Future Vision for Scottish Education Report by Professor Kenneth Muir (2022)<\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report of the One Planet Schools Working Group group gave the following high level recommendations.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1. All learners should have an entitlement to learning for sustainability<br \/>\n2. In line with the new GTCS Professional Standards, every practitioner, school and education leader should demonstrate learning for sustainability in their practice<br \/>\n3. Every school should have a whole school approach to learning for sustainability that is robust, demonstrable, evaluated and supported by leadership at all levels<br \/>\n4. School buildings, grounds and policies should support learning for sustainability<br \/>\n5.
