Geography is a subject of huge relevance to today’s rapidly changing world. It deals with a wide range of issues that impact on the way we live our lives, and how our planet can best be protected for the future. The Geography department strives to provide pupils in its care with both the information and the skills necessary to play an active and worthwhile role in that future.
Geography involves two key areas. Firstly, it looks at what we think of as the ‘physical’ world: landscapes, rivers, oceans and seas, as well as the atmosphere around us. In this respect it can be viewed as taking a scientific approach to the planet on which we live. The subject also deals with the ‘human’ aspect: world population distribution and growth, towns and cities, trade and aid, and the impact generally that Man is having on the planet on which we depend. In addition to looking at some of these problems, we very much focus on positive solutions, such as alternative energies, conservation projects and new technologies.
