Get started – dates and timelines

     BBC Timeline
An excellent timeline of History from the BBC. You can zoom in to look at a particular time period, for example The Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, or Take a Journey to look at key dates and events associated with, for example, Slavery or Technology
       eHistory 
eHistory, from the Ohio State University, is useful for its timelines of various centuries showing the major events, looking at Science, Technology and Culture, among other topics. You can then go and find more information about these events from other sources. It also has some biographies of significant figures from each era. Useful for older students

Recommended websites

                 Dorling Kindersley

This site covers a range of history topics included in learning at primary and secondary levels including the World Wars, Ancient Egypt, and the Civil Rights movement. Particularly recommended because        of its very clear, easy to understand illustrations, with links to pages with additional information

                BBC Bitesize History
  A directory of  the wide range of resources available from the BBC which cover a wide range of History topics,  including pages on Ancient History, the World wars and historic figures. Alternatively, use the      Search box to look for the specific topics you are studying

                  SCRAN

            You can access SCRAN through your Glow account. It has a wide range of images, movies and sounds associated with Scotland’s history and culture gathered from museums, galleries, archives and the                         media

      History World
This website has information on over 300 different history topics, as well as timelines and quizzes. Written by well-known academic, author and media personality, Bamber Gascoigne

               History Extra 

            This BBC website, associated with some of its magazines including BBC History, has lots of interesting articles on a wide range of history topics

     Spartacus 
Spartacus-Educational is an excellent website with information on a wide range of topics including football – difficult to find elsewhere. Created by a former History teacher
    Active History 
A lively and entertaining site covering a wide range of History topics. Written by a History teacher

 History Central 

Mainly American history, but also looks at events in Europe and elsewhere

    Digital History

A range of different resources including primary sources on American history topics including the Civil War and slavery, and more recent events of the 21st century. Useful for American History. Suitable for older students

   Vision of Britain 

A vision of Britain between 1801 and 2001″ “Includes maps, statistical trends and historical descriptions”. Use the website to find information and photographs which show how a town or area has changed in the last 200 years. Produced by Portsmouth University

Horrible Histories
A lively website with lots of resources and activities associated with the popular books and TV series
    Historic UK 
This is a website from a company, Historic UK, which rents properties with a historic link, and produces History Magazine. It has some good background information and interesting articles on unusual topics. You can search for British History, Scottish History, Kings and Queens, and so on
