The 2006 Parental Involvement Act placed responsibility on local authorities to get parents more involved in their children\u2019s learning and to improve parental involvement in three ways:<\/p>\n
1. Learning at home
\n2. Home\/school partnerships
\n3. Parental representation<\/p>\n
All parents whose children attend the school are members of the Parent Forum.<\/p>\n
All Parent Councils are different. Parents decide on things like:<\/p>\n
\u2022 What size the council should be
\n\u2022 Who should be a member of the Council
\n\u2022 How office bearers should be appointed
\n\u2022 When meetings are held
\n\u2022 Meeting agendas, such as: school uniform; parking near the school; anti-bullying policy<\/p>\n
The role of the Parent Council is to:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Support the school in its work with pupils
\n\u2022 Represent the views of all parents
\n\u2022 Encourage links between the school, parents, pupils, pre-school groups and the wider community
\n\u2022 Report back to all parents in the school (called the Parent Forum)
\n\u2022 Play a role in the appointment of Head Teachers and Depute Head Teachers
\n\u2022 Support the school and pupils during school inspection<\/p>\n
What is a Parent Council Meeting?<\/p>\n
This is a very informal meeting where parents\/carers come along and talk about what\u2019s going on in school. Fundraising is also discussed.
\nAn agenda is followed and, as it is a public meeting, parents can put forward suggestions or ask questions outwith the agenda.
\nThe HT\/DHT presents the Head Teacher\u2019s report and the Treasurer discusses the finances e.g. agreed expenditure.
\nThe Secretary takes notes during the meeting and the minutes from each meeting are discussed along with any outstanding issues.
\n(Please note that the meetings are not to discuss any individual concerns you have with your own child as such concern should be made directly with the child\u2019s teacher).<\/p>\n
Where are the meetings held?
\nKilmory Primary School Parent Council Meetings are held termly, on every second Monday in the staffroom at 6pm.
\nMeetings are noted on the school calendar and a reminder is sent out via groupcall a few days before the meeting.
\nMinutes are available and are shared by the Parent Council. Minutes can be requested from the school office.<\/p>\n
What is an AGM?
\nThe Annual General Meeting (AGM) is very similar to the regular Parent Council meetings.
\nThe Chairperson gives an annual report to review the last 12 months and Office Bearers are appointed according to the constitution.
\nOur AGM is held in October.<\/p>\n
