September 2025 Update<\/span><\/p>\n

A massive thank you to one of our parents who organised a super fundraising event to support the school’s hope for a mini-bus of our own. Between a morning of activities, raffles and an amazing prize from from a local shop, they raised an outstanding \u00a35000! The children are so excited to go and visit places of interest, with the Scottish Parliament top of the list \ud83d\ude01\ud83d\udc4d<\/p>\n

Sportsability<\/strong><\/p>\n

We were invited by Active Schools to enjoy a day at Sportsability at Kilmarnock College. We enjoyed six different sporting activities from table tennis, bowling and boccia to curling, athletics and karate. We developed new skills and challenged ourselves by trying out new games. We met some lovely volunteers who helped us learn. We all took part very well and tried our best.<\/p>\n

October\/November 2025<\/span><\/p>\n

smiLE – Strategies and Measurable Interaction in Live English<\/p>\n

This is a learning programme to assist the children with their functional language and communication through everyday life. It gives Deaf students a structured and meaningful way to learn essential communication and social skills for everyday use in a hearing world. Now used across many different educational establishments from primary, through secondary and beyond 18, across the UK.<\/p>\n

We invited our parents and carers in to learn about it. How we support their child and how they can help continue the learning and experiences at home. We had a super turnout and everyone seemed very interested. The children showed their parents and carers what they have achieved so far.<\/p>\n

November 2025<\/span>\u00a0 \"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

November saw the 25th Deaflympics event in Japan. Started in 1925, the competition brings Deaf athletes and sports champions from all over the world together to compete and perform at the highest level. To mark the occasion we visited Greenwood Academy where our Deaf friends led activities for us to enjoy. We earned medals, had fun and thanked them for their hard work.<\/p>\n

Back at Elderbank, we organised our own Deaflympics and invited the peers from our classes to come and experience a little of Deaflympics fun. The children led all the activities, flying their country’s flag high. They demonstrated for others, they joined in with their friends, they made sure everyone took a turn and they even timed some of the activities. All helped by Euan, Lauren and Niomi from Active Schools. It was great fun.<\/p>\n

January 2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome to the New Year and 2026. The school focuses on Scotland and Robert Burns in January and the beginning of February. The children learned a poem with their class. We had one pupil receive 2nd place in P5. The children baked shortbread together too and the children in P6 were lucky enough to attend the P7 Burns Super, as well as a trip to the Burns Museum in the Wellwood Centre. Learning got underway again with symmetry in maths, shape matching and sorting and sentence structure for writing. We also got a shot in the new minibus (so exciting) and went to the park. It was super fun. Next stop Eglinton Park and Cumnock \ud83d\ude90<\/p>\n

February 2026<\/span><\/p>\n

On a beautiful day, in the middle of February we all went to Eglinton Park to meet our friends from Greenwood Academy and Kat Bennett, our Deaf Role Model. The reason… to experience the STEM Trail and come up with ideas to enhance its accessibility, particularly for those who are Deaf.<\/p>\n

March 2026<\/span><\/p>\n

We continue to make the most of the school’s new minibus. To support our writing we have visited 3 Asda supermarkets in the local area, focusing on environmental print, gathering information to write an information report and prepositions, language describing position.<\/p>\n

With the help of Active Schools, we had a trip to Castle Semple where we got the chance to access the Outdoor Activities on offer including cycling and kayaking, finishing with a ride on the loch in the speed boats. It was lots of fun despite the cold and changeable weather, I think we experienced all the seasons in one day!<\/p>\n

We invited Greenwood Academy colleagues and peers to Elderbank to discuss our findings and ideas for Eglinton’s STEM Trail development. There was lots of chat and ideas around the room.<\/p>\n

Finally, we took our new minibus to Cumnock Juniors Social Club to let the community see what they raised so much money for. They were impressed and yet again gave us a great welcome with activities and some generous hospitality. We are so grateful for the huge amount they raised towards our minibus!<\/p>\n
