Careers services play a vital role in supporting young people throughout their time at secondary school, helping them make informed choices about subjects, pathways and future opportunities. In the Scottish education system, where pupils may move into further education, apprenticeships, training or employment at different stages, access to high-quality careers guidance is essential. Careers staff work closely with pupils to help them understand their strengths, interests and aspirations, and to explore the wide range of options available beyond school.
The main role of the school’s careers service is to provide impartial, up-to-date advice and guidance that supports pupils to plan positive destinations. This includes one-to-one guidance interviews, support with subject choices, applications and CVs, and opportunities to learn about colleges, universities, apprenticeships and the world of work. Careers services also work in partnership with parents, teachers, employers and organisations such as Skills Development Scotland to ensure young people are well prepared for life after school and equipped with the skills, confidence and knowledge they need to succeed.
