{"id":747,"date":"2019-10-25T12:20:14","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T12:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/my\/subjectchoicetest\/?page_id=747"},"modified":"2022-11-08T09:32:27","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T09:32:27","slug":"physics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/my\/subjectchoicetest\/physics\/","title":{"rendered":"Physics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is Physics?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Physics is the study of the physical world around us, it answers the \u2018how\u2019?<\/p>\n<p>Natural phenomena like rainbows and gravity are explained. \u00a0Physics gives pupils an insight into the creation of time, space, the universe and our very own galaxy.\u00a0 Physics is not only the \u2019how\u2019 of our physical world, it is the \u2018because\u2019 as it explores every aspect of matter and how it is thread deeply into our lives.\u00a0 To understand physics is to comprehend the modern world; from the sources of the power we use, how planes fly and the electronics in our phones that we use to facilitate day to day needs; these are but a few\u00a0examples of the relevance of physics in all of our lives and what it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What skills are developed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Personal skills<\/em>: work well with others as well as independently and work off their own initiative for assignments<\/li>\n<li><em>Communication<\/em>: describe and explain concepts by means of written work, discussion and presentation.<\/li>\n<li><em>Investigative skills<\/em>: develop skills for independent practical investigation, internet research.\u00a0 For example: plan, execute and then report on an experiment<\/li>\n<li><em>Problem solving skills<\/em>: develop the confidence to try different approaches to challenging problems<\/li>\n<li><em>Mathematics<\/em>: use mathematics to help explain the physical world<\/li>\n<li><em>Analytical<\/em>: grasp concepts, understand and interpret data from experiments and construct logical answers to both problems and experimental questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What kind of person does it take?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interest in understanding the world around us<\/li>\n<li>See challenges as a way to stretch themselves<\/li>\n<li>Good at listening<\/li>\n<li>Never giving up and showing a growth mind-set<\/li>\n<li>Setting targets and doing everything to ensure they are met<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Horizons &#8211; where can this subject take you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Careers using physics are as wide and varied as the topics\u00a0covered in the courses. The prospects are exciting!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Nuclear Physicist, Astrophysicist, research scientist, data analyst, Geophysicist, Medical radiologist and too many more to list them all here<\/li>\n<li>Every possible branch of engineering degree course is open to you &#8211; these lead to very well paid and highly\u00a0espected engineering jobs<\/li>\n<li>For many medicine, veterinarian and dentistry degrees they look for higher physics<\/li>\n<li>Apprenticeships with companies like Boeing, cisco systems, MJD systems to name a small number<\/li>\n<li>A large proportion of physics graduates go into the lucrative world of investment banking.
