{"id":310,"date":"2019-08-29T10:48:30","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T10:48:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/my\/subjectchoicetest\/?page_id=310"},"modified":"2020-10-26T13:21:49","modified_gmt":"2020-10-26T13:21:49","slug":"s3-home-ecomomics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/my\/subjectchoicetest\/s3-home-ecomomics\/","title":{"rendered":"S3 Home Ecomomics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is the course?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The S3 Home Economics Course builds on previous skills and knowledge allowing you to demonstrate your learning in a practical way. \u00a0The relationship between food and health will be explored further and consideration will be given to the specific needs of individuals. \u00a0You will examine the factors affecting food choice including environmental issues. \u00a0You will be required to work in groups and individually on a brief to provide solutions to a given situation. \u00a0Many transferrable skills will be developed such as communication, teamwork, leadership, time management and planning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How will I learn?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You will build skills and knowledge in many different ways.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>individual tasks<\/li>\n<li>group tasks<\/li>\n<li>research and investigation tasks<\/li>\n<li>problem solving tasks<\/li>\n<li>practical activities<\/li>\n<li>planning tasks<\/li>\n<li>evaluation tasks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What topics will I learn?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rehis Elementary Food Hygiene Certificate &#8211; a workplace recognised qualification<\/li>\n<li>Factors affecting food choice<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of nutrition<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of specific dietary needs<\/li>\n<li>Cooking for specific dietary requirements<\/li>\n<li>Recipe adaptation\/development<\/li>\n<li>Event planning<\/li>\n<li>Sensory testing of food products<\/li>\n<li>Practical food preparation and cooking skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As part of the BGE, your S3 course will help build the knowledge and skills required for a successful\u00a0 senior phase. \u00a0The S3 course covers many of the Technologies and Health and Wellbeing outcomes and\u00a0 supports\u00a0 progression to <strong>National Practical Cookery (National 4 or 5).\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 Essential life skills will be developed along with many transferrable skills useful for other courses and future career pathways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What skills are developed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n<li>Teamwork<\/li>\n<li>Problem solving<\/li>\n<li>Practical skill development<\/li>\n<li>Planning and organisation<\/li>\n<li>Time management<\/li>\n<li>Creativity<\/li>\n<li>Resource management<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of product and process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How will I be assessed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your progress on the course will be assessed through a combination of continuous and final assessment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What might this help me with when I leave school?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Scottish Food and Drink\u00a0 Industry employs 50,000 people. \u00a0Careers include Professional Cookery, Food Manufacturing, New Product Development,\u00a0 Nutrition, Health and Dietetics, Events\u00a0 Management,\u00a0 Retail, Teaching, Health Promotion, Food and\u00a0\u00a0 Consumer Marketing, Tourism\u00a0 and\u00a0 Hospitality, Hospitality Management. \u00a0There are many routes into these careers including\u00a0 modern apprenticeships, HNC, HND and Degree level courses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the course?
