{"id":301,"date":"2019-08-29T10:30:30","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T10:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/my\/subjectchoicetest\/?page_id=301"},"modified":"2023-10-26T15:24:13","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T15:24:13","slug":"s3-design-and-manufacture","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/my\/subjectchoicetest\/s3-design-and-manufacture\/","title":{"rendered":"S3 Design and Manufacture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is the course?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The S3 Design and Manufacture course allows you to develop your designing and manufacturing skills. \u00a0You will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>design and manufacturing models, prototypes and products<\/li>\n<li>Gain knowledge and understanding of manufacturing processes and materials<\/li>\n<li>Learners also gain an understanding of the impact of design and manufacturing technologies on our environment and society<\/li>\n<li>Allow development in Graphic Communication and Engineering Science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How will I learn?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The learning takes the format of whole class direct teaching opportunities followed by activity based learning on practical tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the year you will take part in Design Folios, building up your skills in presenting ideas and developing them to a final product. \u00a0You will then have the opportunity to make a prototype model of your idea either in the classroom or workshop.<\/p>\n<p>You will be actively involved in developing your own skills, knowledge and understanding by investigating a range of real-life and relevant<\/p>\n<p><strong>What topics will I learn?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graphic sketching<\/li>\n<li>Designing ideas<\/li>\n<li>Material selection<\/li>\n<li>Manufacturing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As part of the BGE, your S3 personalisation will help build the knowledge and skills required for a successful senior phase. Completing the S3 Design and Manufacturing course covers many of the technologies outcomes and supports progression to <strong>National Design &amp; Manufacture and Engineering Science courses (National 4-Higher)<\/strong> along with developing essential skills used in many other subjects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What skills are developed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The course is intended to develop skills that will help you in the workplace or further learning when you leave school.\u00a0\u00a0 Design and Manufacture develops skills in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>design creativity in the production of design ideas to meet a given brief<\/li>\n<li>evaluate the effectiveness of designs in meeting their purpose<\/li>\n<li>develop skills when working with wood, metal and plastic<\/li>\n<li>using a range of tools, equipment and materials safely and correctly<\/li>\n<li>reading and interpreting drawings and diagrams<\/li>\n<li>creativity in the practical tasks with some complex features<\/li>\n<li>knowledge and understanding of the properties and uses of a range of materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How will I be assessed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your progress on the course will be assessed through a combination of continuous and final assessment. \u00a0There are opportunities for N4 unit completion throughout the course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What might this help me with when I leave school?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Completing this course will help build the skills and knowledge for many design and construction related courses (college and university) and careers (modern apprenticeships and graduate apprenticeships).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the course?
