S3 Wider Achievement Options

As part of the S3 Curriculum, a pupil will have a double period of Wider Achievement to supplement their main subject choices or allow them to try something different.  The options for wider achievement this session are:

Bakery

This course is designed for those who wish to learn practical bakery skills.  The course will enable pupils to:

  • Develop technical skills in baking
  • Develop skills in cake decoration
  • Develop skills in biscuit making
  • Develop skills in pastry making
  • Follow safe and hygienic working practices
  • Develop skills in organisation and time management
  • Develop an awareness of the health impact of different ingredients used in bakery products

A course fee of £25 approximately is attached to this Wider Achievement.

Ceramics

Pupils will experience working with clay. They will learn the techniques and process involved in making various functional ceramic ware products. These skills will then be combined and utilised  in order to build a 3D sculpture.

The course will be a mixture of the following learning approaches:

  • Group demonstrations
  • 1:1 demonstrations
  • Good practice examples
  • Experimentation
  • Practice

Throughout this course, pupils will learn about

  • The properties of clay
  • Hand building techniques
  • Press moulding techniques
  • Throwing on a potters wheel
  • Glazing
  • Combining techniques to make sculptural form
  • Researching ceramic artists

Dance

This course explores the skills and qualities required to potentially study National 5 and Higher Dance.  Primarily a practical course, you will experience and gain knowledge and understanding within the dance styles of Hip Hop / Commercial, Jazz, Contemporary.  In addition you will learn how to plan, organise and teach your own choreography.

This course develops confidence, self-esteem, flexibility and enjoyment of dance.

Data Science

S3 Data Science is a practical skills and research based course where as an individual and collaboratively you will:

  • Understand that data is created through online shopping, internet browsing, social media likes and shares and how this can be used
  • Learn how to use Excel to analyse data and make it meaningful by identify trends patterns

Data Citizenship involves understanding how data is used. You will learn how to interpret data in different formats to find out interesting things from the data, to investigate why unusual results or trends, and think about the impact or behaviour change resulting from the analysis.  You will investigate how data can have both a positive and negative effect on society, such as when biased data is used in decision making or when data is misrepresented to influence people.

Data Science is where you will learn how to interpret meaning from charts and graphs. You will then gather data from different sources then analyse it.  You will then use charts and graphs to visualise the results and present findings, reporting on what you have found and how it can make a difference to themselves or others.

You will develop the following skills

  • Analytical Skills – identifying and linking trends/patterns to spot correlations in data
  • Critical thinking – evaluating and explaining cause and effect and propose solutions
  • Creativity – thinking outside-the-box
  • Problem solving – designing a solution
  • Accuracy – summarising data sets and creating working solutions
  • Resilience – not giving up
  • Communication and IT skills to analyse data and present solutions

Graphic Modelling

This would be an introduction to the National 4 Graphic Communication course which would look at completing some of the National 4 or 5 units in Cad modelling, Graphic sketching and Infographic design.

This course would be classroom based but allow those who want to develop their graphics skills from S1 and 2 further.  The course will involve some modelling with using the 3D printer and Vinyl cutter to make some of our designs come to live.

Use your digital devices for more than just everyday processes.  Learn the basics of digital media, animation and games design and get the best out of your devices.

Musical Theatre

Weekly rehearsals will be exciting, busy and hard work but extremely rewarding and enjoyable. Students will have the opportunity to develop their performance skills by learning where musical theatre comes from, how stories are transformed into stage productions and be part of an amazing cast by performing songs/ show extracts. During this wider achievement, students will study for a National Progression Award (NPA) in Musical Theatre.  This NPA teaches learners how to bring characters to life. Training in proper singing technique and working in group and solo settings will be a key focus. The overall aim is to develop confidence, enjoy being part of a supportive group and produce quality Musical Theatre.

Sports Leadership

The overall aim of the Sports Leadership course is to provide the ideal starting point for learners wishing to develop their leadership skills.  It is a practical course that aims to give learners an appreciation of what is required to lead a sports session successfully.

This Course aims to enable the learner to develop their leadership skills through achievement in the following content:

  • Planning, leading and reviewing a sport/activity session.
  • Developing leadership skills; organisation, communication and adaptability.
  • Leading activities that promote a healthy lifestyle
  • Exploring the role of an official; promoting sportsmanship and fair play.

Learners will participate and lead in a variety of sports/activities throughout the course and may also have the opportunity to volunteer within the school ie in extra-curricular clubs or to visit local primary schools.  It is important to note that the course assesses and develops leadership skills, not practical ability.

This course develops confidence and could lead to volunteering opportunities and progression to the next Sports Leader course in the Senior Phase.

Young STEM Leader Programme

The Young STEM Leader Programme (YSLP) aims to inspire more young people to develop an interest in STEM and pursue the study of STEM subjects and relevant future pathways.

Completing the Young STEM Leader Programme gives you the chance to inspire, lead and mentor your peers through the creation and delivery of STEM activities.

Not only will you have the opportunity to consolidate and extend your knowledge and understanding of STEM but you will be required to plan and deliver a STEM activity, event or interaction.

The course will be a combination of the following learning activities:

  • Teacher led lessons/discussions
  • Individual research
  • Group work activities
  • Planning and preparation for your STEM activity, event or interaction
  • Leading a STEM activity, event or interaction
  • Evaluating your learning

Throughout this course, pupils will learn:

  • The impact of STEM and it’s ability to solve problems
  • Scotland’s role in STEM
  • Pathway’s and opportunities in STEM
  • Challenging STEM stereotypes
  • Health and Safety
