Ceramic Units – Level 5 (S5 or S6 only)

The course will comprise of two sculptural and two ceramic units.  Pupils will explore a range of 3D media, which will later lead into clay work. They will initially learn about ceramic technique before moving onto the final unit. This unit will enable pupils to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in previous units. Pupils will also be able to work in a more independent self-directed fashion.

Unit 1 – Introduction to Sculpture Techniques (SCQF level 5)

The unit outcomes are:

  • Research common sculptural techniques.
  • Produce a simple relief panel.
  • Produce a simple 3D sculptural form.

Unit 2 -Illustrative Sculpture (SCQF level 5)

The unit outcomes are:

  • Research a given brief for illustrative sculpture.
  • Develop ideas in 3D for the brief.
  • Produce a finished sculpture in response to the brief.
  • Present a finished sculpture.

Unit 3 – Introduction to Hand-Building (Intermediate 2)

The unit outcomes are:

  • Prepare and handle ceramic materials.
  • Produce a pinch pot.
  • Produce a coil pot.
  • Produce a slab pot.
  • Create a pot which explores the potential of the material.
  • Apply decoration and glaze to pots.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the firing process.

Unit 4 – Introduction to Ceramic Sculpture (SCQF level 5)

The unit outcomes are:

  • Explore a range of ceramic sculpture techniques.
  • Develop a series of ideas and/or concepts for simple 3D ceramic sculptural form(s).
  • Produce simple 3D ceramic sculptural form(s) for firing.

This option is made up four individual units at level 5.  They are a bundle of units and do not make a full course or award that is recognised by SQA.  Pupils will gain individual unit awards for each unit successfully passed.
