Information about activities

Chess

Looking for an engaging and intellectually stimulating activity? Look no further than our chess sessions! Chess is not just a game; it’s a mental workout that challenges strategic thinking, problem-solving skills, and patience.

In our chess activities, participants will learn the fundamentals of the game, from basic rules to advanced tactics. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn.

Chess requires concentration, critical thinking, and foresight, making it an ideal activity for enhancing cognitive skills and promoting mental agility. Plus, it’s a great way to develop social skills and sportsmanship through friendly competition and collaboration.

 

“Disnae” Studios

In groups, you will be planning an animation using a storyboard; creating characters from modelling clay and wire (goggles provided); creating scenery; filming your animation; adding sound and editing to create a very short animation similar to Wallace and Gromit style.

Skills developed: Team working, Creativity.  Storyboarding. Use of a camera. Animation software editing. Sound editing.

This activity is in Room 12.  Bring lunch and drinks. Goggles will be provided for safe use whilst modelling with Wire.

 

Hill Running

Fancy a bit of a run? Join Mr Cowie and Mr Paterson on a 10 mile circuit of Keith on road, path and trail. The route will start and end at the school.

All you will need is a pair of running trainers, some food, hydration and a positive mind-set.

Factoring in the different terrain and rest stops, we would expect to take between 2.5  3 hours to complete our circuit but will obviously take it as it comes on the day.

If you are interested then come and speak to one of us BEFORE you sign up.

NOTE: 10 miles is a long way (from here to Huntly) and as a result, a good level of physical fitness is required.

Relaxation and Pamper

There will be a variety of relaxation techniques including yoga and sound bathing. There will also be skin care, make-up, nails and making healthy snacks.

Mrs Noble from Blue Violet will be giving a talk about fashion and taking participants through different relaxation techniques will which equip them with basic knowledge of how to cope with day to day stresses.

There will be the opportunity to try out make-up techniques and nail varnish. There will also be the opportunity to explore some aspects of healthy eating and make some snack bars using a variety of healthy ingredients.

 

Bloodhound rocket car/Lego spike coding

Bloodhound LSR is a British land vehicle developed to travel at supersonic speeds! You will get the chance to build and test a model of Bloodhound, supported and guided by members of the RAF STEM outreach team.

You should be aware of the success of the KGS First Lego League team who recently competed at the UK finals in Harrogate. You’ll get the opportunity to build and programme your own robot supported by the RAF STEM team and Mrs Jenkins.

If you sign up to this activity, you will do one of the activities in the morning and swap to the other in the afternoon.

This activity is being run in partnership with the RAF STEM team from RAF Lossiemouth. You will get the opportunity to work on your communication, team working and problem solving skills to name but a few!

As this is an indoor activity, no specific clothing is required. However you will be testing the cars outside so please bring a waterproof jacket if the weather is poor on the day

 

The science of distilling

The Scottish whisky industry is worth £7.1 billion to the UK economy. And, living in Moray, we have lots of distilleries right here on our doorstep.

You will spend the morning at Glen Keith distillery, owned by Chivas, touring the distillery, seeing how barley is turned into alcohol. You will get a tour of the scientific laboratories at the distillery and the chance to help with some experiments.

In the afternoon, supported by scientists from Chivas, we will carry out our own fermentation and distillation experiments back here at school.

We will be walking to the distillery so suitable clothing is required. Decent footwear with no open toes/high heels is required for the distillery tour and the laboratory visit.

We extend our thanks to our partners at Chivas for helping organise and support this event. You will get the opportunity to test your practical skills in science, as well as working with others, communication and engaging with outside organisations.

Please note, as part of the distillery tour, mobile phones ARE NOT ALLOWED. They MUST be SWITCHED OFF when in the distillery and associated laboratories.

 

Keithwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Calling all muggles! Come and enjoy a day of magic at Keithwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Professor Campbell, Professor Lockhart and Professor Sangster will be hosting a range of magical activities, such as:

  • Scavenger hunt
  • Spell slam
  • Design a house and professor
  • Edible art
  • Potion making
  • Finish with a cinematic experience.

Feel free to wear your Hogwarts robes or any other Harry Potter clothes/accessories you may have.

 

Band in a Day

Ever wanted to learn a song and play with other musicians? You will have time to select a song, learn the parts and perform it and even record it if you would like to.

You will develop instrumental skills and team working skills.

 

Radio Show/Podcast

This activity will allow you to create a short radio show using music technology. You will have the opportunity to record your own voice and select different radio jingles and create a minut – 2 minute long podcast. You will develop some IT Skills along with skills in how to use microphones and record.

 

Board Game Championships

Step into a world where fun meets strategy, where every move counts and excitement awaits at every turn! Get ready to dive into the heart-pounding action of our School Activities Day Board Game Championships! From classic showdowns like chess and Monopoly to quirky challenges like Jenga and Uno, students of all ages will put their skills to the test in a thrilling battle for supremacy. With cheers ringing out and friendships forged over the roll of the dice, this is more than just a competition – it’s a celebration of camaraderie and spirited play. So gather your friends, sharpen your strategies, and join us for a day of epic gaming where the only limit is your imagination!

 

Baking

An opportunity to make and decorate sweet treats for people in Keith’s community as a pick me up and promote our skills

Potential to donate cupcakes to local care homes/hospitals/businesses.  Many skills will be developed during this activity such as customer service skills, team work, baking, hygiene and safety, and communication skills

Pupils should bring a tub to take a fancy piece home, pupils should also ensure they wear clothing appropriate for the kitchen and appropriate to visit members of the community.

 

Movie, Swim and Sports

Start the day with an action movie, then head over to the pool for a fun swimming session.  After lunch we will play a game of rounders out on the field.

 

Fitba Fun

If you love football this is the activity for you! We will be outside on the astro doing fun training games and matches. Come and develop your individual skills and teamwork during the morning with us.

In the afternoon we will head up to Kynoch Park for a stadium tour and learn about the history of the famous Keith Football Club and get a kick about on the pitch.
