Latest update (11th August) – Letter of encouragement from one of our Primary 1 parents from last session.

Hello and welcome to Bishopmill Primary School. We are delighted that you will be coming to join us. We are sorry that you can’t come in for a visit this year (due to school closures as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic). However, we are really looking forward to when we finally get to meet you.

In the meantime, we are providing you with a few videos, documents and activities to help you get to know your new school and teachers. You should also have received an email from the school containing some information which is personal to each child (e.g. allocated school house).

We are expecting our school to be changing a bit, before you finally come to join us, so we will continue to post new information here on our web-page to keep you up-to-date.

The document below will give you an overview of our intended transition programme for this session.

1. Transition Programme 2020

You will find some information about our school and classroom routines below.

Please watch the following video for information about the school and transition process.

Please watch the following video for information about the classroom routines.

The following documents will give you further information and advice to help you and your child prepare for starting school.

Schools across Scotland are now expecting to re-open on August 11th 2020. This is likely to take a different format to that outlined in the ‘Information Booklet’ so we will communicate the new arrangements to you nearer the time.

2. An Information Booklet for Parents and Carers 2020

The ‘Activities to Help your Child’ are suggestions only and we do not expect you to do them all. Please choose the ones you think would most benefit your child.

3. Starting School – Activities to Help your Child

Many children have ‘ASN – Additional Support Needs’ at some point throughout their schooling. Please read the information provided to help us work together to provide the best support for your child.

4. Transition Info ASN Letter

Your child may find it comforting to start to become familiar with who their teacher will be when they come to school. The poster provided will help them to ‘Meet the P1 Staff Team’.

5. Meet the P1 Staff Team

Please do not feel that the ‘Pencil Hold and Formation’ sheets are provided because we expect you to ‘teach’ your child to write; we are more than happy to start with a ‘blank canvas’.  However, we appreciate that some children are very keen to pick up a pencil and start to write so, if this is the case for your child, we would encourage you to use the format provided as it is very difficult to ‘unlearn’ bad habits.

6. Pencil Hold and Formation

Please use the links below to help your child take a ‘virtual tour’ of what our classrooms and school look like.  Again, we will update this information later to take account of any changes.

Take a ‘virtual’ tour of our P1 classrooms…

As part of our transition process, we normally collect some information about your child from you (the person who knows them best) and we would therefore ask you to complete and return the record provided. The one below is just a template for you to view; you should have been sent an editable copy via email to complete.

7. Individual Pupil Information Transition Record

We are also asking you to help us get to know your child by supporting them in completing the activity provided below.  We would ask that you only complete one part at a time over the remainder of the term. We will be issuing a video clip with instructions for each part on a weekly basis (starting Monday, 1st June). This is to allow your child to become increasingly familiar with the P1 staff, classrooms and resources, as well as helping us get to know them a bit at a time. Thank you in advance for your co-operation with this.

Please watch the following video for an introduction to the activity.

Please watch the following video for activity 1 – Favourite Colour.

We look forward to beginning our partnership with you to ensure a smooth transition for your child into Primary 1. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch via the school office, using ‘P1 Transition’ in the subject box.

Please watch the following video to meet our P.E. specialist and take part in an extra activity – Favourite Sport.

Please watch the following video to meet our Music specialist and take part in an extra activity – Favourite Song/Mimed Activity.

Please also visit our ‘Health Week’ page on the website to find out how to take part in the ‘Bishy Boa’ whole-school activity.

Next session, the whole school will be using a digital platform called ‘Seesaw’ to communicate and share your child’s learning with you.  You will shortly be receiving a text message from us to invite you to join our class Seesaw page and connect to your child’s journal.  This is a private group and each child’s journal can only be accessed by their invited family members.  Please look out for your invite as our aim is to have all families connected to their child’s journal as soon as possible so that we will be ready to communicate with you when the new term commences.

We are looking forward to welcoming our new primary 1s as the pupils return to school on Wednesday, 12th August 2020.  However, we understand this can be an anxious time in the life of parents so perhaps you will be able to relate to this message from one of our primary 1 parents from last session.
