P4/5W – Week 5

Hello, P4/5,

Hope you had a good long weekend and enjoyed learning about VE day, I know I did.

This week, Mrs Wilson and I have arranged a class video meet on Teams. This will take place on Tuesday the 12th of May at 10:30am. One or both of us will be on to chat to you and see how you are doing, you will be able to see us but you will not be able to see each other as all of your accounts will be audio only, meaning you can hear each other but not see each other. We are really looking forward to catching up with you and hearing about what you have been doing at home, we will not be asking about school work, unless you want to tell us about what you have been doing. We just want to have a chat and hear your stories. On Teams, Mrs Wilson has set up a P4/5W page where you can chat to each other, we have and will be logging in and having a look at what you have been saying to each other – loving all the emojis and GIFs! We can set a few rules in tomorrow’s Teams meet to make sure everyone stays happy and safe in the chat.

This week, the teachers have training days on Thursday and Friday, where we will be the ones who are learning online! So, this week, you only have ‘school’ Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, as Thursday and Friday are in service days.
If you need passwords reset or have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

You can contact us using Twitter or our Glow emails;

We love to see what you have been doing and look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Mrs Wilson and Mrs Gee

Maths

This week, your maths focus is information handling.
There are two main areas of information handling – collecting data and displaying the information.
Here is a BBC Bitesize Video to help you remember what information handling is, this example uses people’s favourite flavours of ice cream;
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z4nyr82
The next clip is to remind you what tallying is;
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zjbcd2p

Time to conduct your own survey!
Watch this BBC Bitesize video to get started. In this clip, two children are gathering and displaying data on people’s favourite pets.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zbmtfg8

I would like you to have a think about what information you would like to collect. It will need to be something that can be easily done during lockdown, unlike the example in the video. Here are some ideas;
– Electricity: your categories would be things like number of light switches, lightbulbs and plug sockets in your home
– Food: your categories would be things like how many tins, apples, boxes of cereal and bottles of juice you have in your home
– Animals: either in your garden, if you have one, or on your daily walk, count how many types of animals you see. In your garden it could include blackbirds, chaffinches, butterflies, bees and ladybirds. Out on your daily walk, your categories could also include birds and inserts, but you might also look out for dogs, cats or different farm animals, depending on where you walk.

Start by drawing out a table, like the one seen in the video, with your categories down the left hand side and a space for your tally marks to the right of it.

Then get tallying!

Now you have collected your data, it is time to display it. This week, we would like you to either display your data in a bar chart (see example https://www.mathsisfun.com/data/bar-graphs.html) or a pictograph (see example https://www.theschoolrun.com/pictograph).

You can either draw your graph on paper, or use a graph creator online, like this one https://www.mathsisfun.com/data/bar-graph.html or this one https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/graphing/classic/bar_pie_data.asp?ChartType=bar, but this can be quite complicated to do if you do not have adult help.

Remember to label your axes, give your graph a title and send a picture of your completed graph to Mrs Wilson and/or myself.

Literacy

For writing this week, we would like you to develop a very important skill – notetaking. Notetaking is the practice of writing down key points of information. When taking notes, you do not write down everything that you are hearing, you try to pick out the main points. This can be quite tricky! The more you practice, the better you will get and this will benefit you in the future, not just in school but when you go on to college, university and/or the world or work.
Main things to focus on while you are taking your notes;
– only write down the main points
– do not write in sentences (when do teachers ever say that!)
– try using different coloured pens or pencils, if you have, to help you remember the information
– find a style of notetaking that works for you. You could try bullet points, a mind map or writing notes under different subheadings, whatever works for you

Your new topic is The Azteks, which you will be learning more about next week. Write the heading, ‘The Azteks’ at the top of your paper, ready to take notes, or in the middle of the page if you are choosing to take notes in a mind map layout.

Now, watch this YouTube video on ‘The Azteks’ and have a go at taking notes. You can pause the video as often as you need https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWxqnZeELbU

Keep your notes safe, you might be needing them next week!

Health and Wellbeing

Check out Miss McNab’s section of our school website and her twitter page @MissMcNab2020 for PE challenges and updates.
To help yourself relax and allow your mind to calm down, try following along with a drawing YouTube Tutorial. Not only can you take pride in producing a brilliant picture, but you can take some time to focus on one thing, have some quiet time and clear your head.
Here are some tutorials I have found that look fun;

Music

Mrs Taylor also now has her own section on our school website with music activities and resources.

This week, Mrs Allen has set another recorder challenge:

Recorder Challenge – Week 5

You should continue to listen to music that makes you feel happy. Putting on some upbeat songs and having a dance not only gets you moving and creating dance routines, but also puts a big smile on your face. For added fun, ask a sibling or family member to get involved and dance with you!

Here are some online music resources you can use at home;

  • ‘Music with Myleene Klass’ on Youtube every Monday and Friday at 10am
  • ‘Body Beats’ online body percussion workshops on Youtube every weekday at 11am
  • Fischy Music Live Assembly at 11am on a Monday through both Facebook and Youtube
  • Rock Kidz – ‘Learning Life Lessons Through Music’ on daily at 11am on their YouTube channel
