Home Learning Reading Challenge

Reading homework this week has been to choose a book at home to read and bring in to class to share.  Please remember to bring your book with you tomorrow and Thursday so that we can find out all about your book Primary 2!

Looking forward to hearing about lots of exciting stories!

School Trip Letter

All children should return home with a pink letter about a school trip to Biggar today. I say should, but as you know this does not always translate into reality when it comes to children remembering to bring things home. If you did not receive a letter home today please let Mrs Hogg or I know and we can either give you one in the morning or send one home after school tomorrow.

thank you

Scotland Topic

We have been working on our Scotland topic and linking this to learning across the curriculum.

We created symmetrical thistles in Maths when we were learning about symmetry and we have been learning about lots of different Scottish myths and legends.  We developed the skill of ‘justifying’ when we had to give reasons for our favourite myth.  Some our favourites were the Wulver, Ghillie Dhu, Selkies and the Blue Men of Minch.  We also created some beautiful artwork of Kelpies – pictures of this to come!

We have also been learning about Robert the Bruce and the story of the spider.  We thought about how the spider never gave up and kept going until it had built it’s web and how this inspired Robert the Bruce to persevere.  We then wrote about a time when we showed perseverance and created a spider web to remind us of Bruce’s spider. We have displayed these on our Learning to Learn wall next to our Legendary Learning List.

In our Novel Study we learned some Scottish words and animals names… Do you recognise these animals from their Scottish names?

We have also been learning about the difference between Facts and Opinions and sorting statements about the Eejits into Facts and Opinions.

Next week, we will be developing our note-taking skills to take notes about the myth of the Loch Ness Monster and use these notes to write a Newspaper Report.

Primary 2 January Update

Hello everyone!  We hope you have all had a great start to 2017 – Primary 2 certainly have.

We have been developing our football skills as part of the Tesco Bank Football Challenge.  We have been learning to dribble the football, do tricks with the ball and drag backs and we have also been playing matches.

Our Novel Study this term is ‘The Eejits’- a scottish version of the Twits.  So far we have created a disgusting menu for the Eejits using alliteration… how would you like some ‘penguin poo pizza’ or ‘slimy snake soup’?

Our Scotland topic so far has had us learn 3 Scottish dances – the Military Two Step, St Bernards Waltz and Dashing White Sergeant.  We have also tried some scottish food like haggis and stovies and have learned about Burns Supper.

There is much more to come though – stay posted and have a look at our updates and pictures on Twitter.

Primary 2 – Fire Safety Talk

With Guy Fawkes fast approaching, Primary 1 and 2 had a visit from some Firemen today to talk about staying safe at this time of year.

The key messages were –

  • to attend organised bonfire events only where barriers and safety measure are put in place.
  • to wear gloves and play safely when using sparklers – they are 4 times as hot as an oven apparently!
  • not to make hoax phone calls to the fire department as this delays their ability to respond to real emergencies.

So have fun and stay safe on bonfire night everyone!

September Update

Primary 2 have had a busy few weeks and have been learning lots of new skills.

We have been developing our sense of rhythm during a fantastic drumming workshop.  Have a look!

We have also been learning about prey, predators and food chains as part of their Under the Sea topic and had a visit from zoolab. We met a giant snail, millipede, corn snake and some rats!

For Outdoor Learning week we have been having lots of fun taking our learning outdoors for literacy and numeracy. We had a number name hunt to help us recognise our number names to 20 and we also worked with the P7s to do an alphabet hunt. We had lots of fun consolidating our learning.

We have also been focussing on languages as part of our Languages focus week including French and even a little Greek. More to follow as the week continues with some German..!
