Health and Wellbeing is the foundation of our school. Nurturing approaches are used throughout our interactions with pupils within our learning environment. Positive relationships are at the heart of what we do at Whinhill and we encourage a restorative approach to dealing with conflict.\u00a0The relationship between our staff and pupils is always nurturing and supportive, providing role models for our children.<\/p>\n

The nurturing relationships between staff and pupils are built on the six key principles of nurture:<\/p>\n

1. Children’s learning is understood developmentally.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. The classroom offers a safe base.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Nurture is important for the development of self-esteem.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Language is understood as a vital means of communication.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. All behaviour is communication.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Transitions are significant in the lives of children.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a whole school we focus on these and integrate them into everything we do which allows us to provide positive role models for all of our pupils.<\/p>\n

Our Nurture Class<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Bothy is a place where our pupils can develop supportive relationships, learn about coping strategies and build their resilience. Some pupils benefit from extra nurture support by spending time in The Bothy. This could be due to challenges they face in their life which are becoming a barrier to their learning.\u00a0As our pupils learn academically and socially they develop confidence, become responsive to others, increase self-respect and take pride in working hard and achieving.<\/p>\n
