Literacy

In term 3 the children have been learning the structure and content for instructions in Talk for Writing lessons. This has helped engage and support the children in their writing and they have linked this to their topic of Natural Disasters by writing instructions on ‘How to survive a natural disaster’. We are putting a big focus on reading this term as we stress how important this skill is for the children in the future but also how it helps them in their writing as well. We are spending time each day reading independently and trying to provide children with books they are interested in. Also the children are            listening to more stories being read by the teacher at the end of each day to develop their listening skills as well.

Maths

This term the children been developing their knowledge of                 numeracy and beyond number:

  • Fractions – In Term 3 the children developed their knowledge of various fractions and can the fraction of an amount.
  • Shape– Children have learned about 2D/3D shapes, their              properties and created nets of 3D shapes.

This term:

  • Measure – The children will be learning about various units of measurement and calculating the area of different shapes and the perimeter.
  • Data Handling – We will be learning how to collect data and           display it in a variety of ways e.g. pie chart, line graph, bar graphs etc.

Inter-disciplinary

This term our topic focus will be on Democracy. The children will be able to identify the main features of Democracy and describe them. They will also discuss the rights and responsibilities of citizens in Scotland.

In P6 the children receive funding to attend 2 outdoor learning             activities. They have completed their first trip to Castle Semple which was a great success. Their next trip is on Friday 3rd May to Cornalees in which the children will participate in map reading and orienteering activities. Children should wear appropriate clothing for the outdoors.
