Primary 4/3

This term we are focusing on encouraging more reading for            pleasure. We cleared out our class library and filled it with all the books we find the most interesting. Reading frequently improves our vocabulary and language skills, our concentration and also helps to develop our imagination. We are looking forward to reading Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox as a class and all the learning we will draw from this wonderful classic! Primary 4 are also enjoying the added challenge of reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and completing independent reading tasks to improve our                             understanding and comprehension skills.

We are working on developing our imaginative writing this term. We will be creating texts with interesting characters by describing their physical appearance, behaviour, actions, thoughts and feelings. We will also be creating descriptive openings and settings for our stories to capture the reader’s interest.

This term we will be exploring multiplication and division. The           children will use different strategies to complete calculations. They will use arrays, counting on and back, as well as quick recall of times table facts. We will use these strategies to help us solve problems and answer questions in other areas of our  numeracy work. We will also be exploring Data handling with Miss Roberts. The children will discover a variety of ways in which data is presented, use a range of ways to collect and organise data, as well use technology to display data in different ways.

We will be exploring the difference between living and non-living things and sorting these into groups. We will also be learning about animals and their habitats, relating this to what we learn when          reading Fantastic Mr Fox!

As a class we are focusing on our emotions and how we can best share these with each other. We are also exploring ways in which we can deal with any challenging emotions that we might have.

Miss Donnelly is helping us with this through her Hi5 programme of teaching. This programme teaches us five skills in order to improve our understanding of emotions. These being kindness, friendship, education, exercise and taking notice.

During this term we will be learning about the miracles and parables of Jesus Christ and relating what we have learned to our Health and Wellbeing work. P4 are approaching the end of their journey to          receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion and continue to work        together as a year group to prepare for this special occasion.
