The course requires pupils to apply their knowledge to evaluate chemistry related issues and develop an informed ethical view of complex issues. This course naturally arouses the interest of pupils and is delivered using an investigative approach to develop knowledge and skills. The 3 units and their respective key areas are detailed below:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chemical Changes and Structure <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Periodicity <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Structure and bonding <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Oxidising and reducing agents <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Nature\u2019s Chemistry<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Systematic carbon chemistry <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Alcohols<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Carboxylic acids<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Esters<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Fats and oils <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Soaps<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Detergents and emulsions<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Proteins <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Oxidation of food <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Fragrances<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Skin care <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Chemistry in Society<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Getting the most from reactants <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Controlling the rate <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Chemical energy<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Equilibria <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Chemical analysis <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Course Assessment Information<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This course assessment structure for this course is dictated by the SQA. There are two parts to this assessment structure:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Assignment<\/strong> \u2013 this written piece of work is completed under controlled conditions and is worth 20 marks and through scaling represents 20% of the pupils overall grade. The assignment assess the application of skills of scientific enquiry and related chemistry knowledge and understanding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exam<\/strong> \u2013 The purpose of the exam paper is to assess breadth, challenge, and application of skills, knowledge and understanding from across the course.
