{"id":1140,"date":"2021-09-30T08:25:56","date_gmt":"2021-09-30T08:25:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/in\/portglasgowhs\/?page_id=1140"},"modified":"2021-09-30T08:25:56","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T08:25:56","slug":"modern-studies-higher","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/in\/portglasgowhs\/departments\/modern-studies\/modern-studies-higher\/","title":{"rendered":"Modern Studies Higher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><u>Description of Course<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Through the study of contemporary international political and social issues, students will develop a knowledge and understanding of society.\u00a0 The course will foster and develop skills that can be applied to new situations and issues in a changing world.<\/p>\n<p>The course units of study are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Democracy in the United Kingdom<\/li>\n<li>Social Issues in the UK \u2013 Crime and Law<\/li>\n<li>International Issues \u2013 World Power and the USA<\/li>\n<li>Assignment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Teaching involves skills based exercises, group discussions, whole class debate, the use of ICT and individual student research.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Homework <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two hours average per week, in the form of questions from textbooks, essays and skills based questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Assessment<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The topics covered will be assessed through unit tests and homework. Students must demonstrate they have achieved the required standards in all areas of study, and submit an assignment on a topic of their choice.
