Nurture<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>At the heart of Nurture is a focus on <\/span>wellbeing<\/b><\/span> and <\/span>relationships<\/b><\/span> and a drive to support the <\/span>growth<\/b><\/span> and <\/span>development<\/b><\/span> of children and young people, many of whom come from areas of disadvantage and require additional targeted support to close the equity gap.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Nurture groups in Inverclyde continue to target support towards children and young people who demonstrate such needs but a wider nurturing approach is also increasingly being promoted in many\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>primary, secondary and early learning and child-care settings to
\nsupport the needs of a wider group of children and young people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>A nurturing approach has been promoted as a key approach to
\nsupporting <\/span>behaviour<\/b><\/span>, <\/span>wellbeing<\/b><\/span>, <\/span>attainment<\/b><\/span> and <\/span>achievement<\/b><\/span> in Scottish schools in a number of policy documents including \u2018<\/span>Included, Engaged and Involved, Part 2\u2019 and \u2018Better Relationships, Better Learning and Better Behaviour\u2019.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>A nurturing approach recognises that <\/span>positive relationships<\/b><\/span> are central to both <\/span>learning<\/b><\/span> and <\/span>wellbeing<\/b><\/span>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>A key aspect of a nurturing approach is an understanding of <\/span>
\nattachment theory<\/span><\/span><\/b> and how early experiences can have a significant impact on development. It recognises that all school\/ELC settings staff have a role to play in establishing the <\/span>positive relationships<\/b><\/span> that are required to promote <\/span>healthy social<\/b><\/span> and emotional<\/span><\/strong>
\ndevelopment<\/span><\/strong> and that these relationships should be <\/span>reliable<\/b><\/span>, <\/span>
\npredictable<\/span><\/span><\/b> and <\/span>consistent<\/b><\/span> where possible. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>A nurturing approach has a key focus on the <\/span>school environment <\/b><\/span>and emphasises the balance between <\/span>care<\/b><\/span> and <\/span>challenge<\/b><\/span> which
\nincorporates <\/span>attunement<\/span>,<\/span><\/b> warmth<\/b><\/span> and <\/span>connection<\/b><\/span> alongside <\/span>
\nstructure<\/span><\/span><\/b>, <\/span>high expectations<\/b><\/span> and a focus on <\/span>
\nachievement<\/span><\/span><\/b> and <\/span>attainment<\/b><\/span>. It is based on the understanding of the <\/span>6 Nurturing Principles<\/b><\/span> which have been outlined below: <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Learning is understood developmentally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Environment offers a safe base.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Nurture is important for wellbeing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Language is a vital means of communication.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. All behaviour is communication.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Transitions are important in children\u2019s lives. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
