BGE – 3rd Level<\/a>, 4th Level<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0BGE course focuses on the development of reading through the detailed study of appropriate texts, involving pupils in note-taking and the planning and writing of Critical Essays. Shorter texts are also used to refine Close Reading skills in preparation for Standardised Testing and National Qualification courses. Imaginative, Personal and Functional writing skills are developed in class and through homework tasks.\u00a0 Underpinning success in this area is the need for technical accuracy. Pupils are also given opportunities for group discussion and Solo Talk. Private reading is particularly encouraged as a means of developing confidence and independence of thought.<\/p>\n

National 4 – BBC Bitesize<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The National 4 course\u00a0aims to\u00a0develop an understanding\u00a0and competency in the four main skills in\u00a0English: Reading,\u00a0Writing, Listening and Talking. Through\u00a0study of fiction and non-fiction texts, pupils will gain extensive skills\u00a0in Understanding, Evaluation, Comparison and Analysis. All work is internally assessed.<\/p>\n

National 5 – BBC Bitesize<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The National 5 course is literature focused, with a specific element of the course concentrated on great works of Scottish writers. Pupils will study a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts to develop their analytical skills, and an appreciation of literature. Pupils will also\u00a0gain extensive skills in Understanding, Evaluation, Comparison and Analysis.\u00a0 They\u00a0carry out close examination of texts, making reference to material they have studied earlier.\u00a0 Pupils\u00a0develop their ability to express themselves in a sophisticated fashion in a variety of forms.<\/p>\n

Higher – BBC Bitesize<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Higher course\u00a0immerses pupils in literature.\u00a0\u00a0Pupils develop an understanding of the great works of writing in English \u2013 from various cultures \u2013 and be encouraged to study these independently.
\nPupils gain extensive skills in Understanding, Evaluation, Comparison and Analysis.\u00a0 They\u00a0carry out close examination of texts, making reference to material they have studied earlier.\u00a0 Pupils\u00a0develop their ability to express themselves in a sophisticated fashion in a variety of forms.<\/p>\n

Advanced Higher<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Advanced Higher course\u00a0enables pupils to specialise in various areas of study.\u00a0\u00a0Pupils are given the opportunity to closely study some of the great works of English literature.
