Nowadays, we live in a digitised, computerised, programmable world and to make sense of it, students need an understanding of the computing concepts behind the technology.\u00a0Whether you want to design a multimedia\u00a0website\u00a0to promote and sell your company\u2019s products or to showcase your latest art work; or maybe develop a program or app to create scientific models or measure fitness, Computing Science is the subject that makes all of this possible.<\/p>\n<p>Computing Science courses at Inverclyde Academy aim to develop essential skills for learning, life and work as students become increasingly confident at writing code and developing complex software solutions.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sqa.org.uk\/sqa\/48477.html\">the courses offered by the Computing Science Department by clicking here<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1><strong>National 4, National 5 and Higher Computing Science\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The National 4, 5 and Higher qualifications are designed for pupils who have a general interest in computing science, as well as those considering further study or a career in computing science and related disciplines. It provides sufficient breadth, flexibility and choice to meet the needs of all learners.<\/p>\n<p>Pupils studying computing science will develop a range of transferable skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work, opening up a wide variety of career and study opportunities.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Course Units and Content<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The content of the National 4, 5 and Higher courses includes:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Software Design and Development<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Become confident in applying the fundamentals of computer programming techniques<\/li>\n<li>Design, create and test software solutions using problems solving skills<\/li>\n<li>Able to confidently tackle increasingly complex programming problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Web Design and Development<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Able to develop\u00a0websites using modern coding techniques (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)<\/li>\n<li>Understand how to integrate different media types and coding to produce multimedia, interactive web sites.<\/li>\n<li>Develop creativity skills by developing own\u00a0websites which apply principles of good design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Database Design and Development<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Able to develop relational databases which are relied upon and widely used across industry and web sites.<\/li>\n<li>Become confident in using SQL coding to perform database searches and other operations.<\/li>\n<li>Use recognised design techniques to plan effective database solutions and solve problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Computer Systems<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Investigate technical components and functions of the latest digital devices.<\/li>\n<li>Able to explain how different types of digital data are represented in binary.<\/li>\n<li>Able to explain how data is kept secure within computer systems and across the internet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Course Assessment\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>National 5 and Higher:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>SQA practical course assignment (30%)<\/li>\n<li>SQA final exam (70%)<\/li>\n<li>Course award is graded A \u2013 D based on combined performance in assignment and exam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>National 4:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Internally marked Added Value Unit<\/li>\n<li>Internally marked unit assessments<\/li>\n<li>Course award is either Pass or Fail.\u00a0Pupils must pass both elements of course assessment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Progression\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Computing Department provides a variety of progression routes. Upon completion of each level, progression is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>N4 to N5 Computing Science<\/li>\n<li>N5 to Higher Computing Science<\/li>\n<li>Higher to Advanced Higher Computing Science<\/li>\n<li>NPA in Cyber Security at Level 5 and 6.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Computers have an enormous impact on the way we live, think and act.
