National 4/5 Design & Manufacture

The design and manufacture course at National 4/5 level allows students to study the design process from brief to design proposal. It allows students to develop skills in initiating ideas and communicating design proposals through a variety of methods ranging from concept sketches and CAD 3D modelling through to physical model making. Students will also gain a real world insight into modern designs and gain a greater understanding of commercial design.

The course content is current and constantly evolving and being updated but students can expect to cover the following topics –

  • Work through the complete design process from initial ideas all the way through to manufacture.
  • Building Ikea flat pack furniture to discuss real world design issues.
  • Discussing design concepts and relating it to popular everyday products – asking themselves “why has this been designed in this particular way ?
