Clydeview Deaf Education<\/strong> Department<\/strong> is the secondary resource base linked to Garvel Deaf Centre<\/strong> which is based in Moorfoot Primary School. We support deaf pupils across the curriculum according to their needs. We have high expectations of our pupils and are proud of the achievements of our former pupils.<\/p>\n

In class support<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Pupils are supported across the curriculum in order to ensure that they have equal access to teaching and learning opportunities. Pupils whose first language is British Sign Language are supported by Teachers of Deaf Pupils who use a Sign Bilingual approach. Resources can be differentiated in order to make them more accessible to deaf learners.<\/p>\n

Tutorial support<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Pupils may have a reduced timetable which allows them to have tutorial support to consolidate learning and improve literacy skills. Adaptations to the curriculum will be discussed with pupils and their families in order to develop a timetable which best meets the needs of the deaf learner.<\/p>\n

Audiological support<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Pupils are encouraged to manage their audiological equipment themselves and be as independent as possible. Where difficulties arise, staff are available to troubleshoot on a day to day basis, and Joe O\u2019Donnell, our educational audiologist is available regularly to manage any issues with audiological equipment.<\/p>\n

Sign language classes<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Paul Tipling, our deaf tutor, teaches sign language to staff and pupils. He runs after-school sign language courses (BSL Levels 1 and 2) for staff. He is timetabled to support our deaf pupils with their sign language development and runs a sign language elective for all 5th<\/sup> year pupils. He is hoping to extend the sign language classes on offer to hearing pupils.<\/p>\n

National Assessments<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

We support deaf pupils in their National Assessments according to their needs. Pupils and students who use BSL are entitled to use BSL in their SQA assessments and will be supported throughout their school career to enable them to do so. Staff will work with pupils from an early stage to establish the most appropriate way for pupils to access assessments in order that they can best reach their potential.<\/p>\n

Clubs and trips<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Pupils are encouraged to take part fully in life at Clydeview Academy and staff will support pupils to take part in any clubs or trips that they are interested in.<\/p>\n

Deaf community <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Staff are keen for deaf pupils to experience the wider deaf community and arrange regular contact with other schools with deaf pupils. We also attend many deaf friendly events such as the signed pantomime at Christmas or events aimed at young deaf people.<\/p>\n
