S1 ICT and Computing Science
In S1, pupils will develop their digital literacy skills using a wide variety of applications and technology as well as being introduced to key Computing Science coding skills.
Digital Literacy
In an ever expanding digital world, it is crucial that students become competent and responsible users of technology. Our S1 course will encourage pupils to experiment with existing applications that can support them in their learning across the wider school.
- Pupils will improve organisational skills through effective file management strategies including cloud storage using Glow.
- Learning about efficient use of online communication and collaboration tools such as e-mail and Teams will support pupils in becoming effective digital contributors.
- Pupils will share their learning achievements and enhance literacy skills by regularly posting on their own blogs.
- Cyber security plays an important role in today’s society. Pupils will learn about online privacy, dangers and safeguards that must be considered to ensure their online presence remains secure.
- Experience of widely used applications such as spreadsheets, word processors and databases will further contribute towards whole school development of skills for learning including literacy and numeracy.
Computing Science
As well as becoming competent users of digital technology, the rapid growth in the digital technology sector has ensured that creators of new technology are in greater demand in the workplace than ever before.
In S1, pupils will begin to gain an understanding of how to create unique software and websites.
- Computer programming is a fundamental skill in Computing Science. Pupils will learn about algorithms and coding using Robomind and Scratch programming languages.
- Web Development is crucial to the success all businesses and organisations in today’s digital world. Our S1 course introduces pupils to the basics of HTML and CSS coding which lies at the heart of all current websites.
- Technology is constantly changing and it is important that today’s students keep up with the latest developments. S1 pupils will investigate and research the latest devices as well as gaining an understanding of how they work and represent all data using binary.
