Global Citizens – 90kg Rice Challenge

IMG_3476.JPG
Gourock Primary first embarked on Just Trading Scotland’s 90kg Rice Challenge earlier this year and has a dedicated team of pupils who market the fairly traded Kilombero rice to our school community.

This has been a huge success and we have now sold 3 batches of the delicious Kilombero rice. Our Global Citizen group are very enthusiastic about the challenge and are passionate about selling because they believe they can make a huge difference to Malawian child’s life.

The pupils have gained many skills for learning, life and work. They are only too aware of how important education is for creating opportunities in a child’s future and decided to produce a rice recipe book to accompany each bag sold, alongside an information leaflet which educates customers about the benefits of buying. We’re ready to receive our next batch!

Global Citizens – 90kg Rice Challenge

We have been busy sorting out our rice cart, ready to sell more of Just Trading Scotland’s Fairtrade Rice!

Each 90kg sold is enough to enable a Malawian farmer to send their child to school for one year. This challenge began in Gourock Primary last year and we successfully sold 2 batches.

Our Global Citizens have been checking the stock and getting the leaflets, rice recipe books and stickers ready for our first customers of this academic year. We hope as many families as last year will support us by buying this delicious rice!

The order forms have been sent home in Monday’s mail! We look forward to the orders pouring in!

Skills for Learning, Life and Work

We are concentrating on developing our Skills for Learning, Life and Work. Each week we add to our ‘Toolbox of Skills’ by focusing on a different skill and identifying ways to use it in order to improve our learning.

One of our first tasks in Primary 6 was the writing and delivery of our Vice Captain speeches. We learned about the powers of persuasion so that we might convince the school of our suitability for the role. The candidates all believed they were the best person for the job. Our speeches were delivered with confidence and flair whilst providing the school audience with brilliant reasons as to why they should vote for us.

Primary 6 provides us with opportunities to develop our leadership skills and take on different responsibilities. After applying for membership of various groups such as; GIRFEC Champions, Promoting Positive Relationships, JRSO, Pastoral Care, Journalists, Global Citizens and Fit4Life, we were allocated our roles and they are keeping us very busy!
